Paging FOAK; UPS

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by stephen.packer, Oct 30, 2010.

  1. So, I live in the sticks and the mains supply seems to have become
increasingly unreliable. I get short (30 second-2 minute) interruptions
most weeks, sometimes several times in a day.

I don't much care about this except it reboots all of the computer
equipment which I don't like. Would something like eBay item
230502627434 be worthwhile just to act as a buffer for the mains until
    it comes back on?

Anyone got any advice that doesn't include moving?

gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
    saying:
Yes. But I'd spend the extra for an APC than some shonky off-brand fleaBay
    tat.

I've got an APC Smartups 1500 sitting here. Put new batteries in it recently
for a client. He then decided to put a "proper" UPS in the computer rack, so
I pulled this out and fitted a 3009 with extended run time module for him.
This leaves me with this 1500 jobby.
I don't know where about's you are but if you're interested it's yours for
75 Earth Pounds but you will have to collect (Bloody heavy!!) or UR from
    Saffron Walden or the likes.

    Any good to you?

We've had a few recently, so I stirred myself to call the Powers (hah!)
that be (or not, as the case may be). The very nice young man
acknowledged the recurring problem and took me through the procedure
that occurs when a wet branch flails at the power line. They were
aware, of course, of the four 30-second outages that had occurred in
the past few days, and engineers had walked the line and were at that
moment doing the fixing it properly thing.

Hasn't happened since, but he was quite insistent that I ring each and
every time I notice a blip, so they can add importance to the notes and
ensure prompt fixing. This isn't the first time they've run this line,
so I assume that's really what they want. Doesn't cost anything, so
I'll do it - even if it means dragging the corded phone out and
plugging the antediluvian POS in so I can talk to the outside world in
    the middle of a blackout.
