Paging EDTA battery peeps

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Dec 20, 2004.

  1. So, I've read that putting EDTA in your battery removes sulphating and
can restore performance and a rounded teaspoonful in each cell is the
amount to put in a 'normal sized battery'.

What is a normal size? Is a rounded teaspoonful ok for a bike battery of
1000cc? That seems rather a lot to me but I don't know so that is why
    I'm asking.

How much is ok to put in my bike battery? I want to try the chemical
route before splashing out on a new power source.

    Cheers.

Have you tried dunking your battery in a cup of coffee?

  3. Look, I'd rather get it right(ish) first time and no, I don't have any
    cups big enough.

"Four (4) grams are divided into approximately equal portions and added to
all the cells of a motorcycle battery."

  5. 4 grams. Cheers. I was going to guess 7 divided by 6 if nothing useful
    came fourth.
    Yah, already seen that, thanks.

Finding a chemist that stocks it is going to be the next thing. I may be
    some time.

  6. I wonder if this EDTA is the major constituent of the classic Batt-Aid*
    pills?

    *which actually do work, BTW

Of course, nothing can revive a battery which is completely shagged.

  8. Several phone calls have turned up nothing. My battery isn't shagged and
is good AFAIC but when jump starting from a van it spins much faster.
This *could* be a shagged battery or because the starter is getting
twice the oomph from a battery that is designed to start a diesel.

    <googles for Batt-Aid>

  10. Cheers for that. I just got back from Halfords with some Bat-Aid as no
chemist I went into did the EDTA (I'd not seen your post before I went
out) and I *think* I may have found at least part of the problem.

"Check electrolyte level before adding tablets" it says.

You guessed it. Bone dry <G>

I used the halfords batt aid pills numerous times and have no
complaints, Ethylene Diamino Tetra Acetic acid can be bought in bulk
    from companies like Fisher Scientific

    www.fisher.co.uk

however this is usually to companies. If you know someone who works in
a lab they would be able to get it for you.

  12. Cheers. I've gone the Bat-Aid route as well. I Plopped one in each of my
bike battery's cells and put the others in my van. At £3.29 I thought
    you couldn't go wrong.

  14. What I want them to do is give me a feeling of a brand new battery.

If I can borrow a charger from somewhere I'd be able to do the last part
of the process, I.e use it/agitate it (the battery) for a few days and
then give it a full charge.

  16. Not an option until new year.

The van seems to like it though.
