Paging Edinburgh residents - well Ratho ideally

Having come 15th in his age group at the BRYCS national final at EICS
Ratho in June, his local climbing wall reckon it is worth him going up
for the British team selection trials there on 7 December.

In June we stopped at a Premier Inn in Livingston, but we thought we
might go for something closer to Edinburgh centre this time, as we won't
be the same Wolf Mountain gang to socialise with, and fancy a look round
    the old town.

Any ideas on places to stay. Not too luxurious, given the diesel I am
going to have to burn that weekend.

On the Ratho side of the city or South Queensferry area would make the
early morning run to get him signed in on time easier.

There's lot's of little hotels on Haymarket Terrace / West Coates /
    Roseburn Terrace / Corstorphine Road.

    Stayed here 3/4 times. http://www.thelodgehotel.co.uk/

Nice location - 10 min walk from town. Easy access 1/4mile from
Haymarket Station, bus stop opposite hotel.

There's a Premier Inn at South Queensferry

    http://www.premierinn.com/pti/pTiibsRedirect.do?INNID=EDIQUE

For rather obvious reasons I've never stayed there so have no idea what
    it's like

For sight seeing in Edinburgh there's a train station at SQF.
~ 15 mins and you're in the city centre

    In communiqué
Hmm. "We do not usually take children under 14".

Thanks for the suggestion of an area to try though.

In fact their sister hotel 'Da Vincis' sounds worth a look if we decide
to stay in Livingston again after all.

Ta. SWMBO used to have a mate that lived in South Queensferry (with a
view of the brisge) where we dossed a few times years ago, but she very
    inconsiderately emigrated to New Zealand.

  6. Just beware of falling bridge bits. I saw a thing the other week where a
woman in a cottage almost under it fetched out a large rusty/redleaded
nut and sheared bolt that had fallen through her roof.
    Certainly fills one with confidence.

I wouldn't stay there unless you're used to post apocalyptic surroundings.

In Edinburgh, most of the city centre hotels are much of a muchness, I'd
guess parking would be the deal maker.
I'd at least run through the screen scrapers listed in this article.
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-hotels.

I'll ask around if there are any well recommended places. Do you have a
    preferred budget max ?

    I live in Wolverhampton ;-)
The problem is that SWMBO is totally out of touch with the current real
world when it comes to accommodation prices. She is a YHA member and has
successfully dragged us to stay in a family room at a hostel a couple of
times. I'm fairly easily pleased and for an over night in transit to the
'chateau' an Etap hotel standard is all I ask.

Seeing as it will be on my birthday though I am trying to persuade her
to allow a more generous budget. She will still most likely have an
apoplexy if we have to spend much more than 40 quid a head per night on
    'digs'.

I think it comes from being the daughter of a Presbyterian minister.

I was going to suggest one of the budget chains that I prefer
(innkeeperslodge) but checking their website indicates no availability for
that weekend. No rooms at the Ibis or central Travelodge either.

    Best book something pronto. laterooms.com hotels.co.uk &
    http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/ are your friends
Check reviews at Tripadvisor, especially if booking via laterooms

Indeed. The Premier Inn we stayed at in June is already full (with
aspiring climbers and their families, as then presumably).

Plans are a bit fluid at present as there may, or may not, be other Wolf
Mountain entrants to share travelling costs. The Owner has a new
minibus, but his son, who would otherwise probably be up for it, got
himself quite a nasty rope burn recently and may not want to go.

I must concentrate SWMBO's mind on finalising arrangements.

I though it was quite nice, and the ever truthful wiki agrees with me.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Coates

The lodge, and quite a few others around W Coates overlook the School which
    is a lovely building.

I guess you must live in a Platinum palace and shit diamonds for a living
    right ? ;-)

Edinburgh has hundreds of hotels, many small and family
run. It is quite likely that they are not webbed up.
Thing is they are all quite good at charging:)

Have you considered calling the Tourist Office?

    Google [edinburgh tourist information]
    www.edinburgh.org/ looks like it.

They will quite likely give you some suggestions
based on your requirements and may well sort it
    all out for you.

I have once stayed somewhere pretty cheap in the city
centre and it was quite dire - dampish. Sounds right
up your street:) I forget the name tho'.
    <checks yell.com> -
Maybe this one - LYNCLIFF HOTEL.
I only mention it since I recommend that
    you dont go there:)
It was a while ago so maybe they fixed it in the last 5 years.
Seems to have rooms tho' - £60.
per room it seems (+£35 for child in room).

This one on the other hand will likely be georgous.
    http://www.waltonhotel.com/tariff.html
    £110 for triple room.
Just may be the place where I attended a wedding reception
    about 15 years ago.

  15. This was under the rail bridge - it seems to be falling apart a little
    bit faster.
