Actually, I've got no idea what to call it either.

Sort of something like Sex in the City meets Six Feet Under meets
    Neighbours.

It did make me laugh out loud a couple of times though.

Yes, that's the one. Watched the opener last night, and it was
    excellent.
Quite. I guess "drama" is prolly the best description. Seems to
follow the mould of stuff like Thirtysomething, Six Feet Under, etc.

Ummm... but I hate "Sex in the City", never get a chance to watch enough
of "Six Feet Under" to follow what was going on, and as for
    "Neighbours"... pfffft.

Channel 4's website describes it as a "US drama series" (fairly obvious)
    and "darkly comical" (fairly accurate).

Ah! "Narrated by deceased resident..." That explains a lot - I missed
the first 30 minutes, and wasn't paying attention properly for what I
did watch, so couldn't work out who the narrator was.
Yeah, definitely worth watching the first couple of episodes of the
series proper (last night was just a pilot, wasn't it?).

Heh... well played - I nearly didn't spot that.

OK, the style is very "Six feet under", while the content is more "Sex in
    the City", but more subversive.
You just have to love the line, "I want a divorce ... I can't live in this
    detergent commercial any longer!"
Did you not get a few clues from "Three days after my funeral..." and "A
    week after my funeral..." ?
I was tempted to flip over to E4 after it had finished and watch the 2nd
episode, but I decided I could wait until next Wednesday.

    Sounds like a reasonable description.
    Also:

"We have to use a condom"
"A condom? Can't we just risk it?"
    *thwack*

.... so it's not all dark humour.
Like I said, I wasn't paying attention properly - I was meant to be
revising. I heard something about a funeral, but didn't have anything to
    associate it with.

I see the pilot's repeated on Sunday, so I'll watch it then, and
probably the first episode that follows it, in case I miss it on Ch4
    next week.

Have to build a PVR, then I could record it at home, transfer it across
the 'net, and watch it here. Hmmm... geeky... *drool*
Swine - I've only got terrestrial down here. And there's quite often
something on on Wednesday evenings. I'll have to get it recorded and
    catch up at weekends.

Actually one of the things I didn't like was the way it kept dipping its toe
into the waters of farce and then changing its mind.

Things like that should settle down, once the series starts properly.

    "Desperate Housewives"
Might be worth actually watching TV then. I've been trying to get hold
of thirtysomething but it isn't out on DVD yet.

I know last night was just the opener, but I think it's going to be
good. It's been a big hit in the states, apparently.
I used to love that show. Mind you, I'd be wary of watching it now,
in case it didn't live up to my memories.

Saw it on (at least) one of my recent trips over t'pond. Shite, it
was. Basically just seemed to be a glorified soap. Didn't waste more
    that five minutes on it.
    It was shite too, IIRC.

heh. I just *knew* you were going to say that.
    And that :)

Don't take this the wrong way, but if I had to choose between movie
reviews from you and AndyR, I think I'd go with Andy's.

You don't say? Thing is, I view TV and movies as something to
entertain me. If, while doing so, they also engage some sort of
thought process then so much the better, but first it's got to be
    stimulating.

Most 'drama' series have neither interesting plots, nor are they
light-hearted enough to be simply amusing. I'd rather watch the likes
of Heartbeat - at least it's not pretending you should take it
    seriously.

  16. Why? Get a Humax PVR 8000T for about 120 to 160 notes.

Why? Do you want the long list, the short list, or the very short list?

    a) We've got satellite, not terrestrial (although I assume it could take
    an input from the Sky box);
    b) How am I going to transfer it from that PVR onto my laptop?
    c) Geeky? A pre-built consumer unit? Pur-lease.
