I read "The Blind Assassin" by Margaret Atwood while I was away, which
I recall being your favourite recent read.

I quite enjoyed it, but not as much as your recommendation lead me to
believe I would. I suspect I "didn't get" some aspect of it. Care to
describe why you like it so much?

Well, yes, it was very 'readable'
And I quite liked that too.
I'm not sure I agree about the characterisation - some of them seemed
to be almost caricatures (e.g. Winifred). And the bit I didn't really
get was the behaviour of Laura and Richard to each other when it
emerged that Richard was abusing her - just didn't make much sense to
    me.

I've just finished that too. You're right, he doesn't pull any
    punches. A great book, IMHO.

Although it's rather disturbing to try and measure what he says
against the real world - I look at people at work and think 'Pinker
was right, I know exactly why you're doing that and saying that'. It's
like having a secret handbook for life or something.

Oooh ohh, fanally a 'ukrm book club' author that I've read some of. A
Handmaiden's Tale and the more recent Oryx and Crake spring to mind -
is Blind Assasin her latest one then?

It's great that people write, and presumably understand, sentences
like this above, but odd that almost none of the people who read and
    write English do.

    That's a hell of a typo, Bruce.

I may have to use that in a non-contextual way at some point.

No, Blind Assassin is her Booker-winner from a few years ago.
Oryx and Crake is her latest one.

I feel it could refer to "she who loves it up the arse" in a uk.r.m.
    context.

Ahh, right. I did enjoy O & C. Sort of gets you wondering why the main
character is so twisted and un-self concerned, IYSWIM, but it all
    becomes clear in the end.
