Paging Contractors

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Simon Atkinson, May 6, 2004.

  1. The agency I am working through at the moment (and have been for 6
months or so at the moment) are now asking for a copy of my passport to
prove I am entitled to work in the UK...

Now, as I work for a limited company, and the agency have engaged my
limited co to supply a contractor (unnamed) for a job, I am loth to send
    them a copy...

Anyone else had this lately? I think it's a bloody cheek.

    No because

    a) I wanted the job
    b) They put me through the security clearance stuff.

I'm now allowed access to Secret documents with the occasional sideways
    glance at Top Secret.

I've already got the job (been doing it for too bloody long).
Already had that a few years ago.
I'm not allowed to tell you what I can see (according to the bit of
paper I signed, or didn't depending on who's asking).

But there is the rub - they are not employing me. They are buying a
service from my limited company. That's a very important point and a
lot of tax implications hang on that fact.

    That's not important right now.

When they send you out cockle-picking, they need to know that you're
entitled to the lifeboat service and a Union Flag on your box.

Mine is addressed to 'The Director' of my limited co and asks for a copy
    of this unnamed persons passport...

Hmmmmm... I wonder if the passport of a non-exec might do? It doesn't
say it wants the passport of the person doing the work.

Passport is one of the allowed forms of proof of ID for the security
clearance check so showing for this reason is valid - the OP seemed to imply
that it wasn't for this reason, just the agency checking entitlement to work
    in the UK.

Yup. Remember, I don't work for the agency, I work for my limited

As long as they pay my invoices... Which they are sort of saying they
    wont.
Oddly the one I needed the clearance for was nothing to do with defence/
    weaponry or anything like it.

It wasn't a death threat. It was a Not-That-Specific threat.

It was a "You won't know when, or where, or why, or who..."

A bit like a Manhatten Transfer track actually.

No, I don't mean threatening Porl, I mean the threat itself. If you're
going to off somebody, wouldn't you want them to know who and why, so
as to "get your own back" or "teach them a lesson"?
