I wouldn't start playing with clock speeds.

What a load of unmitigated tosh!

USB2 requires compatible hardware it's not just a software based
implementation. Also it's worthknowing that under Windoes XP there are
a lot of problems with both the VIA and ALI chipset implementation of
USB 2.0, the NEC chipset is the one that's known to work properly
    consistently.

    HTH.

    Why not?

I`ve got an AMD 2500+ Barton. Stock speed 1.83Ghz (166 FSB) running happily
as a 3200+ Barton 2.2Ghz (200 FSB). It will run higher but the PCI bus
starts to shit out as it`s not frequency locked. Memory is happy at 200
    (400DDR) too.

My video card. GF4Ti4200. Stock speed 270Mhz core and 550Mhz memory is
running like a charm at 300Mhz core and 625Mhz memory. Again, it will go
higher but at this level of overclock it stays nice and cool. The memory on
the video card is rated at 3.3 ns/606Mhz anyway, so a safeish memory
    overclock there.

Use a little common sense and spec out your components so you don`t aim too
high at first and it`s a quite safe and fun thing to do.

t'other way round.... USB to com port. I don't think a serial com port
would support anything close to the data rates of USB.

I think it's a x86 laptop, it runs hot anyway, he will kill more than
just the processor if he starts farting around with clock speeds.

If he wants it to go faster, either get a better operating system, more
ram or a different computer, or all three together and buy yourself a
    Mac G5.

  11. It's on the cards, but not just yet.

A few quick benchmark tests saw this thing performing at a rate
comparable to a 1.6GHz Athlon FFS, and I don't even want to talk about
the memory speed except that it runs at the same speed as some poxy
    PC100 SD RAM.

No wonder I couldn't get Doom3 to run properly, it doesn't even run
stuff that came out two years ago smoothly in all places!

  13. Well I know that now!

    <rolls eyes>

I'll probably keep this laptop for a while but I won't be rushing out to
    buy another one.

Doh... Well, it's still a useful computer, as it works at the moment.
You saw Quake2 running on my 800 Mhz G3 Mac, fast and smooth wasn't it.
    :) I wonder how fast a 800Mhz G3 is in Athlon terms?

Yes, but as WC said his computer is from May this year, I think it's safe
to assume the required hardware is in place. USB2 support came with SP1a.
    Fascinating.

    That's pretty cool.

I like that way it continuously updates, if you use it with no load on
my machine it quotes the processor a 600Mhz, give the machine a bit of
load and you can see the processor up it's speed to cope[1].
