  1. How can I tell if my computer's got USB2 Support?

It's WinXP, I've looked in device manager and System Information but
this doesn't throw any light on the situation.

It's a Sony Vaio laptop that I bought from new in May this year. I'd
have thought it would have USB2 support, but you never can tell, eh?

I've just found this natty little TV tuner with a lot of good stuff
that's about the size of a Bluetooth dongle and I'm very tempted to buy
it but I want to make sure it'll work as it ain't cheap enough to sell
at a fraction of the cost if it doesn't work, if you get my drift.

If SP1 has been installed, then it should have USB2 support.

  3. It had SP1 from the factory and I installed SP2 a while back with no
probs, so I can assume its ok then, before I wield the plastic?

have a look in Device Manager and see if it says

    Universal Host Controller
    or
    Enhanced Host Controller

    the latter is USB2 support
some machines have only USB1, some have USB2 .... some have both ;o)

PS if you examine your pc with this software

    http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3

it details all your hardware far better than device manager

I've heard that for laptops there are some sort of adaptors which are
connected to COM ports and then you get USB input...not sure if it's true,
    though.

Yeh, but that doesn't help if your Pc hasn't got a USB2 port in it.

  11. Hokey doekey.

As it doesn't say anything that exactly matches what you've said there,
I'll list what it does say, although I can guess the result is a good
one. Here is the list of stuff that comes under Universal Serial Bus
    Controllers:

NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub

    Cheers.

"Standard Enhanced " don't ya just love contradictions like that ;o)

It may indicate USB2 but be a poorly worded description.

    For example mine says

"VIA PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller"

To be sure try that software I posted ^^^ up there that'll definately
    confirm if USB2 is present

  14. I am trying. Either the download location is very busy, I'm not
connecting to it for some reason or it's just borked.

    I'll keep trying.

  15. The 'enhanced' bit sounds good but it is the other bit that is stopping
    me right now.

    It does sound positive, mind.

For a couple of mirrors to that software (Everest Home Edition) that Steve
    has pointed out.

And it does kick arse in a system-information kind of fashion. I use it
myself when speccing out peoples PCs prior to upgrading them.

  17. Wow, what a cool prog!

I would've posted a bit quicker but was doing benchmarks and stuff (this
    thing's a bit slow!)

Anyway, the only thing I could see that relates to this is under
'operating system/system drivers', are two entries, thus:

Driver Name Driver Description File Name Version Type
    State
usbehci Microsoft USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller Miniport Driver
    usbehci.sys 5.1.2600.2180 Kernel Driver Running

    and

Driver Name Driver Description File Name Version Type
    State
usbhub USB2 Enabled Hub usbhub.sys 5.1.2600.2180 Kernel Driver
    Running

Sorry for the shite formatting but I copied it dirstly from the viewing
pane. The results look good though.

Anyway of editing/changing things within this, like CPU and memory clock
    speed?

USB 2 devices are backawards compatible with USB 1 ports. It will work,
just slower. I really doubt that the data rate would be an issue. Equally
it seems unlikley that the Vaio would not have USB 2 support.
