In her defence, I also did this as a child.

No, on second thoughts that really doesn't help her case at all, does
    it?

Firstly (as others have probably said) O2 will need to provision the
    service.

Secondly, the phone will (probably) need to be configured (to use the
proper access points). An APN (Access Point Number) is basically a
specific connection that's made within the network for Packet Switched
    services.

You could have, for example, an APN for the WAP services. This will not
necessarily have direct connection to 'the internet' for your mail
services. I would suggest you got on the phone to your SP (or O2's
customer care) and asked them to provision an APN that gives you
    internet access.

    This probably helps more...

They don't know about calculators in the Forest. The preferred tool is
the abacus, which is surprisingly advanced for them but the alternative
would be to switch to base 12.

At a guess, I'd say it's a Sony Ericsson P900, unless the make and model has
already been dsiclosed elsewhere in this thread.

err, yes - OP. Nokia 6600.

SE P900 was considered but ditched on the grounds of being too big and
    too expensive.

    two words: "direct debit".

**** all that buying little scratch cards and having to pay your bill
before you actually make the call.

    [snip useful advice]

and thanks, if for nothing else, for using "provision" as a transitive
    verb.

Direct debit is one thing, having the money in there is quite another. I
use payment books and Giro slips at the bottom of bills because it gives
you and extra day or twos grace. Sure it's a PITA, but it beats the hell
out of a £25 charge for being a couple of quid short in your bank
account, and if you're using a payment book etc, you can't get clobbered
by the finance company for missing as well.

this is nothing to do with not having the money, and all to do with
    bad money management.

well, maybe - it's more the fact, I don't have a PAYG phone, and never
    have had one.
