    There's little else to do.

Possibly. Also prolly 'cos I handle a lot of them, and I guess 'cos
some of them are hand built they're not so robust as production ones.

  6. I've broken various; I assume that if it's small enough to
go in a jacket pocket, it's robust enough to survive when
    the jacket gets thrown somewhere...

    William Grainger says...
I managed to break a phone by slinging it down a dual carriageway at
80MPH and then Orange the cheeky fuckers charged me 15 quid for a new SIM
as they reckoned I should have recovered it from the road.

So, you're careless with someone else's property and call them cheeky
when they expect you to pay for it. I don't understand; why should they
    fund this and not you?

Err, Andy, what network you with? My UK phone's on contract with
Orange for the grand total of zero pounds per month. Sure, the calls,
if I make any, are more expensive, but very unlikely to ever get over
15 quid a month. It's also useful that I don't have to remember to get
new credit every three months like wot I do on the poxy French PAYG
phone, that's never got any credit when I actually want to use it.

Other networks may have similar tarrifs, although ISTR they weren't
keen to mention it until I rang up to cancel the contract.

Well I can understand the reluctance to retrieve a SIM card from a dual
carriageway. I agree it's reasonable that you should be expected to pay for
a replacement in those circumstances, but 15 quid for a chip that probably
    costs 25p?

It costs a lot more than 25p. Not as much as 15 quid, but add in the
admin involved in mailing it out, switching accounts over etc. they
aren't doing more than covering their costs.

Because I'd paid for insurance to cover a damaged/stolen phone.
According to Orange the SIM is not part of the phone.

No, it isn't part of the phone, additionally I don't believe it actually
belongs to you. If you look at the Terms and Conditions I suspect you'd
find that, whilst the phone is your property the SIM is not- the SIM
    belongs to Orange.
