I've just bought my first phone with GPRS (Nokia 6600). But nothing
works[1]. Do I have to ask my service provider (O2) to turn it on, or
is there something else fundamentally obvious that I've missed? Or is
    the phone fooked?

[1] no errors or anything, just when you say "yes" to connect to
server, it just returns to the previous screen.

    PayG or Contract?
If it's PayG, you need to tweak the gprs settings so that it uses
PAYG.O2.CO.UK instead of the default servers. It doesn't allow access to
all features though, which is a pain (hence me sticking with the gsm
access for a while, as with a new PayG sim, you get 3000 minutes per month
    provided you top up monthly).

contract. When I said "nothing works" above, I meant "Nothing relating
to GPRS works" - all the standard phone features/MMS/voice work
    fine...

I had to get Orange to switch on GPRS. Tried it for a couple of weeks and
it was like surfing through molasses and gave up.

yeah, I'm sure it'll be crap, but at the moment I'm in "new toy" mode,
and want all the features to work.

Ring 'em up. I've always had to with Orange and they've sent me sim
updates via sms to activate the gprs. You then generally need to
fiddle with it a bit to get the internet gateway rather than the wap
    gateway.

Me, because I use my phone so little that the cost of rental would be
    pointless.

If you use it /that/ little you don't need it.

I dunno, Steph has a PayG mobile just in case I need to get in touch or
the car breaks down type thing apart from that she very rarely uses it.

If you're going to be all sensitive about something this trivial, I
suggest UKRM isn't the newsgroup for you. Now **** off.

  17. I do. I have no mates, and so only phone home occasionally.

My PAYG costs me about £30 a year, with no hassle.

Show me a contract that cheap.

Not to mention being able to recieve calls, which is quite important. :)
I did have a landline, but since we got broadband, I had the second line
(mine) removed, so only need the mobile.

Indeed, I have had my Virgin phone with a single £20 top up for over two
years and there's still a tenner left on it. Plus it's unlikely to get
nicked as (a) it looks shit and (b) its large enough to club would-be
    assailants with.
