Yes, the market is picking up, although I'm still noticing some agents
    posting rather amusing rates.

Trouble is that a lot of the candidates that seem to be coming through
are of course the most brilliant IT people that ever walked the earth,
which is why they were let go by their previous places.

Given by the number of <expletive deleted to save myself from the libel
lawyers> people I've interviewed for a position that my current client
    has open, you're in a minority :).

    Why, I thank you.
If we're talking voluntary redundancy, I'd agree with you - the ones
that are most likely to take that are those who are best connected and
usually highly qualified and skilled. Not surprising given that those
at the people most likely to find another job.

I'm talking more about the "oi you, out the door" type redundancy.
While agree that this is doing stuff by the book, any sane company[1]
will try and do their utmost to keep their top IT staff, at least from
a development perspective. The discrepancy in productivity between
indiviuals at either end of the scale is well documents to be at least
an order of magnitude so it would be somewhat suicidal to get rid of
their top performers. Not that I haven't seen this before...

    [1] Yeah, yeah I know...

*DING* When I was made redundant a few years ago, it was a choice
between me & the one other senior developer. He got to stay purely
because he lived just down the road from our largest client, & spent a
day or two a week in their offices doing bespoke stuff. I live 150
miles away, so it wouldn't have been practical for me to take that over
    if he went.

They took me back on 7 months later as EKS (on a subsitence rate) when
things picked up a bit, then made me permie head of development, so
t'other guy now works for me. It's a funny old world.

technically, it isn't even redundancy - they're moving my job to
France, but not offering me the chance to move with it.

I need to look into whether this is strictly legal within UK
employment law. Hey, WUN, ask your missus...

That certainly doesn't help, agreed. Plus of course a lot of IT career
progression seems to be attainable only by moving employers so people
are let go instead of having the team's carcass picked over by other
    teams first.

Plus there's the usual "HR says we can't keep contractors longer than
x" that seems to be especially virulent at the moment.

opportunity to move, but don't have to pay relocation costs,

AIUI it's not strictly legal if it's the same job & they'll be taking
on/moving someone to fill it in France. You can only make posts
redundant, not people, & your post isn't being made redundant if
they're moving it in its current form. Of course they'll just say it's
different enough to not be the same post.
