    Ha.

One of my directors has told me to get something on one of our techs
so we can bin him as soon as possible. It doesn't have to be clean and
it doesn't even have to be legal but I've got to nail his arse. I'm
cool about it because I don't particularly like the bloke but it is a
    bit extreme.

ta. But it's probably set in stone already, with no "luck" involved.

I'm sure this doesn't need saying, but document/record *everything*.

HR departments ****-up with surprising regularity, and a little leverage
can be jolly handy (not to say lucrative) when in a tight spot. Just
such a ****-up made a £6K difference to me a couple of years back.
Regrettably (for him), a colleague was a little more... trusting.

Hope it goes as well as it can.

you aren't actually disagreeing with each other.

Ben is correct in asserting that it's very difficult to get rid of
permanent staff in France. So, to affect a headcount reduction,
they're getting rid of people in the UK. But they're doing it by the
book, and paying people off more than is the legal minimum.

I have a few little leverage points, which I'll be playing as
    necessary.
ta. As I mentioned elsewhere in the thread, it may be worse than
    redundancy on the cards[1]

[1] transferred into a really crappy job that I know they're trying to
    fill at the moment.

As Darsy has pointed out, what I meant was that in order to get rid of
someone in France it's really hard and they have to be careful, so
they're doing the same things here, probably out of corporate "habit".

I don't think it's quite as bad. In france it's such a problem that,
as seen by the world a few years back when Sarkozy was interior
minister and tried to change it, employers won't offer positions to
youngsters without experience as they can't then get rid of them.

Many managers have also commented on their reluctance to hire French
staff, as they tend towards a "the world owes me a living, I don't
actually expect my boss to be telling me to work hard" sort of
attitude, presumably as a result of the more general "job for life"
attitude prevelant throughout France. Not IMpersonalE, but certainly
that of my wife and others.
