    Erm, why?

The actual place we're staying is pretty insignificant - there's loads
of places in the Algarve we haven't visited, all of which can be done
    from where we stay.

Broaden your horizons, enjoy a moment of decadence, add some adventure.

    Need I go on?

    *shrugs*

The last couple of times we've been out there have been for the riding,
not for the 'resort' itself. In March we're going because I was checking
out flights on BMIBaby and scored them at a stupid price - then phoned
my mate who booked the same flights and is coming out with his missus,
    too.

We'll probably do France in the summer and Spain / Portugal in the
    autumn on the VFR, too.

Has that managed to avoid the wreck that happened on rec.skiing.alpine
then? Nowadays I don't even look at the rs... groups as they all
seemed to get infected. Maybe I'll resubscribe to the backcountry one
again for a while to see how it is...
Just like ski boots then. I always thought it was much easier for
boarders, but I guess as technology has moved on, the amount of
control available, and desired, has moved with it.

Thanks. I thought that would be the case. Ho hum. Any idea on the
    cost bands for cheap/medium/expensive kit?

  9. Do you now dress up like a sheik as you seem to be acclimatising to
    Middle Eastern decadence?

no, I'll be in jeans and trainers - except when I go for pre-dinner
drinks at Vu Bar, which has a trousers and shoes dress policy.

Well that made me smile. You can always spot the people who have to deal
with "the great British public" as part of their job.
I would make the point that I booked my Christmas break (Hong Kong) last
year less than 2 weeks before I wanted to go and got flights / hotels at
a good price and when I wanted to travel. Same for my two European
trips in September. You can book late but you run the risk of being
disappointed if you can't be flexible with your requirements.

Cheap boots are less than £100, medium would be £110 - £150, anything over
£150 will be top of the range boots. Stuff varies so much with
manufacturers, some of their boots will be horrible but others may be
good. Boots need to be slightly too tight in the shop with your toes just
touching the tip. They will pack out as your wear them (wander around the
house in them to help breaking in). Some have heatable liners, but you're
just speeding up the break in process really.

This time of year there tends to be a new breed of posters with
"interesting" personalities. I like the ones that work in shops, think
they know everything and their opinion is the only one that counts. I
think rss is on a par with rsre (mostly harmless), with the former getting
a few more flames, but nothing serious.

Everyone and their dog being off of work and wanting to fly off
somewhere nice and warm. Peak season. Worse than school holidays.

A quick fanny with Expedia throws up the following results:

Direct flight with EK (Emirates) from LON (London = Luton, Stansted,
    Gatwick, Heathrow) to DXB (Dubai):

    Outbound: 26/12/05
    Inbound: 2/1/06

    Cheapest EK rate £881.50
    Flight with Lufthansa £2254.10

Now, do the same duration and airlines but stick it in the middle of
    June and you get this:

Direct flight with EK from LON to DXB:

    Outbound: 12/06/06
    Inbound: 19/06/06

    Cheapest EK rate £368
    Flight with Lufthansa £457.10

    Compare both:

    EK Xmas: £881.50pp
    EK June: £368.00pp
    Dffrnce: £513.20pp

    LH Xmas: £2254.10pp
    LH June: £457.10pp
    Dffrnce: £1797
The travel agent only offers it because the hotel is offering it. The
hotels offer it because it is off-season. You will not get 3 for 2 on
    *any* peak season dates.

Thanks to both of you. I'll try to take that advice, but that nearly
cost me an arm and a leg when I went looking at jackets last weekend.
    Ho hum.
