Well, I've gone and done it, I've booked myself in for a Tae Kwondo
    class on Tuesday. <Gulp>

I expect to be very knackered on Wednesday, and totally unable to move
on Thursday just in time for the second lesson.

But with any luck, if I persevere I'll actually manage to regain some
fitness and lose some weight )

    Ohhh, cool - well done
    That's very possible :)
Yeah, it's very good for fitness etc. I'm just back from the Southampton
class I go to and I'm knackered to the point of having limbs feeling like
    lead weights.

I tried to get Steve to go along too (I'd much prefer to get another
mug to tag along when I try something new, then I don't feel as much of
a prat when I get things wrong) but he said something about 'if I do
full contact I don't want to be wearing that pansy foo-foo headgear and
    stuff'. Bah.

The guy I chatted to earlier who runs the classes appears to be very
nice, and he's allowing me to have a short session on Tuesday(s) to tie
in with the darts,[1] plus a reduced fee for 10 weeks as a taster. And
I'm allowed to use my Judo gi for the interim period, but if I decide
to stick at it I am expected to buy the TK gi. So, I've got the gi
ready and I've got a white belt ready, all I need to do now is take a
deep breath and give it a go! [2]

[1] Whether I'll actually be physically able to hit the dartboard
after the session remains to be seen, I've not done any strenous
activity like this for over 10 years.

[2] I do think that my hard-earned brown belt is a much nicer colour,
though. And I've got a black belt that was bequeathed to me in
anticipation of the next grading that I never got to due to a car
    accident.

<laughs badly> Probably a good thing he's not doing it then, as he'd
probably get seriously hurt - jeeze what are men like?! If it's an ITF
class (International TaeKwon-Do Federation), then sparring pads on hands and
feet are mandatory for free sparring. If it's a WTF (World Taekwondo
Federation) then it's full contact (so no pads on hands/feet) but wearing
    body and head protection.

Do you know if it's an ITF or WTF class?
That's pretty good - it'll give you a chance to see what you think of it
    before deciding.
Just take it easyish - don't overdo it.

No idea, but I'll ask on Tuesday. At this point in time though, it's a
bit irrelevant to me..it's giving me a chance to regain some fitness
and hopefully enjoy it (I don't do Gym's, they are *so* boring) so I'll
just take it as it comes.

And yes, men are really PFF's themselves, aren't they?
    Indeed )
Ooh no, at least I'm getting the shorter session on Tuesday, I'll
probably still have a very purple face after about 10 minutes though )

Yeah - each has its own advantages. I do ITF purely by accident because
that happened to be the one I went to - it's the more traditional style.
WTF is more sports oriented and is the version that's in the Olympics.
    Certainly can be.

I do anyway. My fitness isn't what it should be at the mo for various
reasons, so I probably look as though I'm about to have a stroke or summat.

Ah, I see. So I'll probably be able to tell the difference anyway then
) Personally though, if there were the two styles available locally
I'd be more inclined to take the traditional one, but that's probably
down to my previous MA roots.
Heh, I remember when I returned to Judo as a Senior, I got a purple
face just doing 40 sit-ups one session, my mate was worried I was going
    to keel over!

What's the normal practice for warming-up and warming-down exercises in
TK? I'm assuming it should be the same as Judo, but without the
    breakfalls ;o)

You possibly won't be able to tell for a while tbh. If they do Patterns
(similar to the Karate Katas) it's ITF, if they do Poomses, it's WTF.
:) Thing is, there's so many different types of fitness.
<grins> Varies from class to class, but the ones I go to tend to do a half
hour warm up - running around, pressups, situps, circuit training, games etc
before doing TKD specific thangs. Warming down is variable, depending upon
what you've been doing - often do a bit of gentle stretching at the end.

Ooh, do I get to do star-jumps too? I think I'd best get some ankle
support sorted, as the L ankle still isn't feeling too clever although
it has been feeling a bit better of late. I almost managed to run (in
a fashion) without looking like a cripple last week.

It was only a short run, mind, the sort of thing you do when your work
colleague drives his car at you for fun. [1] Care in the community
    really works, doesn't it? <G>

Strangely enough, when I think back to all the hours of training at
Judo, I seem to recall the actual Judo specific stuff and not the
warm-up and down bit, yet I probably did do about 1/2 warm-up
beforehand. And a decent warm-up is a good idea, otherwise it is very
easy to have part of your leg muscle go <ping> from the top of your leg
when attempting to show the NW squad how much you really want to be
    picked.. That was painful.

Hmm, I suppose arm-locks and strangles aren't part of TK..they're my
    fave.

[1] This is Wally we are talking about, and he's as mad as a hatter.
    Absolutely barking.

Good for you , its a good sport for physical fitness but depending on
how serious or mental the club is watch your joints.

I Did Wado Ryu for 12 years and my Joints and back are shagged (hence a
tourer not a gixer), its the type of sport you need to take up when your
a wee kid and your joints and bones are still supple. But if its just
for fitness go fo it you cant beat it or boxersize.

Ta Ken, I've done Judo since I was a kid but had to give up after a car
accident, I'm hoping my joints haven't siezed too much! I don't suffer
with 'Judo knees' at all, yet I know a lot of Judoka that do, one who
still teaches and can barely walk.

I'd go back to Judo if I could, but my ankle is so knackered it
wouldn't take much to get me flat on my back..so I'm hoping something
like TK will be a sort of compromise.

TK prob isnt the best if your ankles knackered you do a lot of jumping
around and landing on one leg this wont be good for a dodgy ankle. If
you want to get fit try Boxersize. Before i did Wado Ryu I boxed at a
club called Grainger park in the west end of Newcastle, (fought John
Davidson once (light middle champ)) I have to say i was fitter when at
boxing than Wado, athough i did overlap them for a number of years.

Boxing 14 yrs old to 19 Wado 16 to 28, Now at 37 Nowt but golf and
occasional 5 a side and excersizing the beer arm :-(

Hmm, you've got me thinking now. I'll turn up on Tuesday as promised
and explain the ankle situation [1] to Danny, see what he recommends.
Apparently after you've fractured an ankle your brain has an inability
to tell exactly where the foot is in relation to the floor, [2] so the
jumping bit could be a problem.

The exercising of the beer arm is no good for any part of your body
apart from that arm. I'm working on reversing it, I just need to find
something that excites me (which I think TK could do) and gives me the
incentive to actually carry on, which the Gym doesn't.

    [1] A fracture/dislocation I managed to do stepping off a barge.
<sigh> The knee faced Southport and the foot faced Birkenhead. It was
extremely painful, and it made a cracking noise as it went. I also
managed to damage every bone in my foot at the same time, I certainly
didn't do things by halves that day! It's probably the result of that
that caused the crash in the tunnel in France that killed Di, but don't
    tell anyone.

[2] Sounds like crap, but it is what I was told after I managed to
tear the ligaments in my foot just getting off a chair a couple of
years ago, plus a work colleague has actually affirmed the same thing
happens to him too, after doing his ankle in.

ALong with that the ligaments were screwed in the Ankle and so thats
what they did - screwed them up.
    In a cast for 13 weeks !
I get a locked ankle occasionally and some pain in certian weather but
its actually stronger now than it was. I play 5 a side but the 11 a side
    is off.
Give the TK a go you odnt have to sign up for a year or nowt so no harm
    in it eh.

I was non-weight bearing for 8 weeks, then partial w/b for another 8
weeks, plus loads of physio. If you accidentally put weight on the
foot during that period in time the pain was excrutiating and not
something I want to repeat again. For some reason when you suffer
something like that you always seem to look at surfaces wherever you go
and determine whether or not it is 'crutch safe'.

They took the plates & pins out of my ankle because I have slim ankles
and there was a danger of the pins wearing through the skin purely by
movement, so they are now in a bag over there > (points towards
drawer), but I can't wear my Alpinestar boots any more because there is
too much padding in the ankle area and it's *effing painful*, because
the bone started to grow around the pins prior to them deciding to take
    them out.

Hence, I'd be easy game at Judo now because an easy simple foot sweep
would have me on my arse no problem.
