I popped into the other BMW place, no joy, but I asked if they new of
anything going - they did some computer lookup and came up with:

Oakdene specialist cars in Hitchin have a new-ish shape 7 Series 740i
    V8, 93 L-reg, for £2990

any use? I pretty sure we've a few ukrm-ers near Hitchin could take a
    look for you.

"FSH" - who cares what the mileage is...

TBH, I'd be tempted myself if I wanted a luxobarge.

Either that or the PO made a couple of trips to the petrol station
    recently.

I assume you figured out *why* older luxobarges are so much in demand
    at the moment?

Bad form, but you can get a later shape seven for around that these
    days, if you don't mind a 2.8 inline 6.

Having driven Hog's 728i I reckon I could settle for one of those.

Hitchin's about 30 minutes north of here, so that's even before you get
to London. But I guess you knew that.
Hmmm. Lemme know if you'll go to see it, I may just pop round for a
    laugh.

Somebody tried to fill up the tank at 88p/litre...

The "old and expensive to run" part of the car market is extremely
sensitive to petrol prices so most people won't buy them or even try to
get rid of them when petrol prices reach silly levels like now.

Only people like me (who don't care about fuel consumption much because
they only do a few thousand miles a year anyway) and those who benefit
from luxobarges for other reasons like you and your back would consider
buying one in the current climate.

And that's before you get to the repair costs - maintenance and repairs
on luxobarges are still expensive, only the car isn't worth a lot any
    more.

So people tend to buy two-three year old Festers and Focuses and shit
like this "because they're cheap to run". And forget about
    deprecation...

BTW, I realise they may not be your cup of tea but have you considered
Honda Legends? A certain Mr Hewitt of this parish really rates them (as
do I FWIW), they tend to be even cheaper as most people haven't
cottoned on to their quality, they're very, very comfy and make great
    cross-country cars.

I've now got the mental image of Darsy posting this whilst wearing a red
suit, holding a pitch-fork and stroking his goatee.

More worryingly, as it's Darsy, I've got the nagging feeling that it may be
    an accurate picture.

Sir wants some ludricous import from the Far East, sir does. Like a
debaged twin-turbo Subaru Legacy estate. Which may *just* be within
    your budget.

I'd stay away from all the two-doors (like most Skylines, Supras,
RX-7s) as they won't do sir's back any good.

Well, if you get into Watford or somesuch I can pick you up and we can
drive up there - only downside is that I'm not sure if your back's up
to the Skyline's suspension. Shouldn't be a problem if I've fixed the
'leccy bits on the comedy Merc by then but that's looking a bit
doubtful atm. Oh well, I guess I could always bolt down the seat in the
    SORover.
