I wouldn't worry too much about this bit, darsy. He has to do that to be
able to read his screen.

 

They are also a lot harder to code - with Windows[1] you pretty much run
with full system priviliges and anything you do can affect the system
as a whole.

On unix (and Macs and linux both come into this category) by default
your user can affect their home environment only. Modern linux systems
(Ubuntu, Mandriva) and Macs *do* allow the user to temporarily get
super-user status but it's a deliberate action[2].

Having said that there have been Mac viruses (and the Mac Air was the
first one cracked in a recent competition between a linux laptop, a
Vista laptop and a Mac Air - and it was by targeting a vulnerability in
Safari) but they require mouth-breathing levels of stupidity on the
part of the user (or deliberate malice) for them to infect the system.

I stuck it on my desktop last weekend (upgrade from 7). So far so good
(apart from Crossover office killing X - but that was down to the
(closed source) Nvidia driver that I'm using. A quick re-install of the
latest driver solved the problem..).

They don't - generally. It also slows down the hard-drive to DVD speeds
(the IDE interface can't cope with two seperate types of devices on one
chain). Or at least it used to (3-4 years ago).

Tbf, I'd do exactly the same if the tables were turned, only my weapon
