Diclofenac and other NSAIDs don't do anything for mine.

Pain killers (including opiates) have never worked.

The only thing I've found that works is Ergotamine, so I take Migril.

  2. If she is at that stage it's largely too late..
Nurophen Plus - I take 3 N+ with a glass of milk and go back to sleep.
    I take sumatriptan - but it's a prescription-only drug - and like most
of them needs to be taken when the first symptoms start.
Taking enough codeine-based painkiller so that I go to sleep. That's
about the only thing that works if I don't take a sumatriptan quickly
    enough.
I avoid paracetamol both because of the rebound effect and the fact
that it doesn't seem to work too well on me..

  3. They can help - they contain codeine and paracetamol along with a type
    of antihistamine.
They don't work particularly well for me but I suspect thats because I
    don't react well to paracetamol.

  5. Pain relief - most people think that migraines happen with abnormal
blood flow in the brain (the blood vessels overdilate causing the
pain - the triptans work by being a selective vasoconstrictor within
    the brain).

The NSAIDs work because they short-circuit the pain responses - the
asprin/nurophen in the site of the pain and paracetamol within the pain
    centre in the brain[1][2].

    Phil.

[1] Which is why rebound pain is greater with paracetamol - the pain
messages are still being sent by the source. Because the central pain
response is being blocked the source nerves ramp up the volume. Once
the central supression wears off the increased level of signal gets
through. Or at least that is how my arthritis doc explained it..
[2] As far as I can remember anyway..

  6. It not contrriction - migraines are caused by over-dilation of the
blood vessels in the brain (they think anyway..). Which is why
    selective vasoconstrictors like sumatriptan work.

There are times, you know, when I'd be really interested to know how
    your mind works.

At other times, like now, I'm _so_ glad I don't.

Well of course I could post anything about anything and expect you to
get the 'reference', but normally it implies that there is some
connection between a new posting and what's gone before.

It's like, you know, a _conversation_? Where each statement relates to
    the last? Otherwise it's what's known as a 'non-sequiteur'.
