ISTR we have a couple of bird watchers here, so I thought I'd tell you that
I saw a golden pheasant this morning, wandering around in Northumberland[1].

    Does that make me cool?

    I hope so.

Didn't have a clue what it was mind, "**** me, that parrot's a hell of a
    size!".

[1] Both the peasant and myself were wandering around in Northumberland, in
case there is any confusion on this point.

I knew somebody would pick up on that as soon as I had my
    one-nanosecond-after-pressing-send moment.

Mr Google, but he didn't tell me that there are communities in the UK, just
that it was native to China so I assumed it must have escaped from
    somewhere.

Hence the following brief phone call.

Me : "Hello, this might sound mad, but I think I've just seen a golden
pheasant wandering around Prudhoe in Northumberland".

RSB woman : "It's alright, you're not mad; they've released some with the
regular pheasants and a few people have phoned in to tell us about that
    one."

Me : "Ah, OK, so it's allowed to wander round by itself then?"

RSB Woman : "Yes, that's fine. We keep a track on where they are and don't
be surprised if you see a few people round trying to get photos of it."

Shame I didn't have my camera this morning, because it was out in the open
less than 10ft from me. It would have made a nice picture.

I typed a better description than that into Google. When you're dealing
with a bird that has a bright red chest, a golden crest, blue wings and long
tail feathers it's pretty easy to find, really.

They just like Runrig, it is a bit of a cult thing really as RR play
at the DK festivals so they have a huge following, having said that the
Danes like Status Quo as well...

That's exactly the site I came across although I don't recall my exact
search. I know I didn't use any quotes.
Not what you expect to see standing by a road in Northumberland when you're
    walking along, certainly.
