I'm having a quiet fapp under my desk. I did ask The Doctor if I could
have one, and the frosty look told me all I needed to know. I did
point out that it would almost certainly appreciate, and would be in
the same fabled league as the Vincent Black Shadow, but she wasn't
    convinced. Women.

Heh. They were only £35k/€50k if you got your order in
when they were first announced over a year ago. I know
two guys in the club who have them on order so they may
yet become my New Best Friends.

If I had the money spare I'd have one, but it's the
choice between an Aston and a DD16RR then it'll be the
Aston first as I'd get *much* more use out of that.

I don't think I'll be racing next year, maybe just the
odd round but definitely not a full season. I want to
get the 600/620 hybrid sorted first and then do more
trackdays and hopefully some on the 748 as well. Then
there's the Hypermotard dilemma and I can also see some
two-stroke delights in the not too distant future...!

I'm not so sure about the appreciation, you know. If you
look back at all the previous specials, the R bikes, then
they're still *expensive* but certainly haven't appreciated
in value. Sure, they're not the same kind of "exclusivity"
as the DD16RR, but they were still expensive Ducatis built
in very limited numbers - some more limited than the DD16RR.

    The 916 Senna, 996R, 998R, Foggy Rep, Bostrom Rep[1],
Bayliss Rep, 999R, Airwaves Rep, Xerox Rep - they were
all limited runs and are all still out there knocking about
and can be bought for a lot less than the original price.

I can see a lot of DD16RRs going to very well off collectors
of shiny trinkets who wouldn't know what kind of engine it
had, let alone watched a single MotoGP race in their life.
The rest will end up owned by people too scared to ride em!

The only other (similar) example I can think of recently
is the NR750 - how does that fare these days compared to
    it's original selling price?

[1] My personal favourite of all the reps and the only
one (except maybe a 998R) that I would buy in that shape.

Slightly detuned and that's in "road" trim I'm led to believe.
Stick on the race exhausts and the "race" map and it'll be
even better. As they say, 1,150bhp per ton should be quite
    exciting!
    Heathen.

BTW, I have a free key for Half-Life 2 [1] coming my way
shortly, as I've already got it but just bought it again
as part of a box set to get some other stuff [2]. I'll drop
you an email with the details as I know you'll love it.

[1] the fps computer game thingy
[2] the Orange box from Steam to get HL2:Ep1,Ep2,Portal,TF2,etc.

  11. TYhey were all tuned versions, more or less, of the original 916. Which
will be, in time, The One To Have, long after the tuned versions have
    had their day. Trust me.
    £35-40k, allegedly.

There are plenty of others: the RC30, and (for all its faults) the
    RD500LC.

Yeah, that's what I meant. If you wanted to make money,
why not just stick it in Bonds or something?

Speaking of RC 'ondas, when I was looking for a new bike
(which ended up being the 748) I was almost tempted by
an RC45 which was £7.5k at the time. These seem to have
drifted upwards slightly in recent times too.

  14. Immaculate ones fetch over £8k but yes, you're still right: it's not
    appreciation.

There again, thinking about it, take a Vincent Black Shadow in as-new
condition (and the Vincent Owners Club built a new one from parts
recently and sold it, IIRC, for £35-40k) and compare it with the
    original cost which was...

    <Googles>

    £402 in 1951.

Allowing for inflation, is that appreciation or not? I suspect it is,
    but...

I'd love to borrow an RC45 for a day just to see what it's like on a
    variety of different roads.

I was never all that taken by the RC30 and when you consider other
bikes from that era I'd have taken the OW01 in preference.

There will always be the few that *will* appreciate, and
appreciate incredibly well, but I really don't think that
the DD16RR will be one of them.

The Vincent is obviously long gone and won't be made again-
tooling, spares, etc. You can't say the same for the Ducati
at this point so it's pure speculation atm. Honda could
easily go back and make more NR750s and they would still
be NR750s, just not from the first "batch", IYSWIM.

As a percentage of overall bikes it's incredibly small.
Probably similar to cars, if not smaller.

  18. Wrong. The Club has just made one from scratch, as I said. They have all
the tooling to make *anything*. At a price, of course.

Ok, I'm showing my ignorance here. Again.

The point I'm trying to make is that for it to be one of
the "originals", surely it has to be made at the original
time of production? Is it not like the difference between
a Honda CG125 (or a Trumpet) and one made in Brazil/India/BongoBongo?

I wouldn't have thought that anything built in 2007, even
using the same tooling, would be worth as much or held in
as high regard as something made back in the 40s/50s/60s -
be it a bike or a car?
