Ok with a bit of farting around with an bench grinder, a new nut cut in
half, the old nut, a hacksaw and a file, I've managed to clean up the
old thread a fair bit. The old nut gets quite a purchase on it, but the
thread definition is not the greatest, to say the least. It doesn't
look as bent as it was before either, but actually because of the way
the pully goes on the top, a little bent-ness doesn't really harm it.
The new nuts won't go on nor clean up the thread 'cos they are too soft.

So, I think, with one of them there die nuts, it might just be good
enough with a new nut. Worth a try at least - so I can borrow one from
    the ukrm tool store please?

I'll get on the phone and check availability. I'm working on a Swiss
manufactured turbine at the moment so asking for a metric die but is a
    reasonable request.
