Pagaing TOG - even though you don't rate 'em....

...... How much would you suggest is a 'fair, market price' for a Honda
    NS400R?

I've just seen one which is virtually standard, but has 35k on the clock,
but has a 12k, receipted[1], engine in it, with new rings etc and the old
    engine 'for parts'.

It also had corrosion on the *outside* only of the fork legs and has a few
blemishes, which is what I'd expect off a 16 y.o. stroker.

The rad fan is operated off a manual switch, which is a worry, but apart
from that and the cosmetic minor blemishes it seems good for the age.

The joker is asking £1850, I was thinking of offering max, £14-15 hundred.
What do you think, ignoring the whole fact that you don't like 'em anyway?

    TIA

    Dave

[1] The engine is receipted and I don't doubt the seller's honest, but how
can I trust the breaker (unnamed) he got the 'new' engine from....[2]
[2] And how do I know it ain't cobbled together unlike std NS engines with
their balanced pistons & cranks & stuff [3]
[3] The throttle is v v heavy which I'm not sure of - is it easy to
accidentally route the cables so it feels light on the first1/4 and stiff
for the rest of the turn, or is it, as I hope, just a crappily lubed
throttle on a bike that has done only 300 mile in the past 18 months.....

    Ta for that! :)

Had guessed you might say that. Just out of curiosity why don't you rate
'em? Is it a stroker thing or have you had some bad experiences with NSs?
If I were to change tack and start looking at RD/RZ500s or Gamma 5s would
    the answer be the same?

What (reasonably) large capacity (for a two stroke at any rate) would you
    recommend, if any?

    TIA

Never had any trouble with my previous two... Maybe I was lucky (the first
one was from the original Honda UK test fleet - I know this as i saw a pic
of it's plate in an old bike mag article. Strange how that was considerably
    quicker than the second......)
So which one then? I've never been a Yam stroker fan and I know that Gammas
had a habit of eating 2nd gear, but just wnat (as opposed to need) an 80s
    race rep stroker again.
When the missus inherits her squillions I intend to have a whole garage of
stuff like that, but for now want a (two stroke, more than 2 cylinders) bike
I can ride (almost) every day and still take on the track without it making
    me look too shabby.. [1]

    Dave

[1] Yes, yes, I know. A CG125 would make me look shabby with my shite
    riding, etc etc etc :)

  6. That was the one I blew up. They must have repaired the gearbox and then
    flogged it.

Never ridden an NS400 so can't comment but I did own an RD500 for a few
years and have ridden a few RG500's. IMO the RD500's a better bike. OK so
it's not as fast but it's much better built and doesn't have the habit of
blowing up quite so often. I did 15000 miles on mine in standard tune and
5000 with a Stan Stephens stage 3 motor. The only problem I had was the
rear pots nipping up when the oil pump cable snapped.

    For a large 80's 2 smoke I'd get an RD500, fit 17" FZR600 wheels and
forks[1] and get some decent exhausts[2]

[1] They drop straight in apparently
[2] The original ones are very restrictive and weight a ton
