  1. Especially as they keep crawling off the plate while you
are trying to work out which bits to eat. ;-)

I think they may be. Not sure though because IME they're served in the
shell. I've not seen whelks in the shell
Umm... it was something between the size of a ping-pong ball and a small
apple. It's got spines (not very prickly ones) on the outside of its
shell. You smash the shell and eat the internal bits. Only found them
around Albi but I suspect it's 'cos I haven't looked.

It's an interesting sweet flavour IIRC. Mind you, it was about 10 years
    ago when I ate them.

They're very, very good. In Sicily, there are seafood places that
don't serve anything with a face. So you can have spaghetti with sea
urchin/mussels/clams followed (or preceded) by sea urchins, mussels or
octopus, all with cold beer from a household freezer in the corner and
a scowl from the waiters if you look like you've finished and you're
    not ordering more.

Apparently, urchins were used as a butter-substitute in the Shetlands
when the folks there were poorer.

Not sure. What are they generally called? In any event, I do like most
seafood, but in general it should be cooked, at least lightly.

I should've known that you'd be the goit! And just for the record, I
actually meant git... as you well know...

Thank you for the educational bit... :)
