Black Mischief is a jolly romp in east Africa in the style of Scoop
and well worth a read, though rather unPC these days.

    Champ muttered:
I've not read Handful of Dust, but have read a few others - the Sword
of Honour series, Brideshead Revisited... They all have a distinctly
murky undercurrent, even at the brightest moments. Satire rather than
    comedy.

I don't think it's meant to be witty, but as Weggy said, satire. I've read
Officers & Gentleman (v long time ago), Scoop and Black Mischief. Latter
    two were fairly entertaining.
