Londonderry has been chosen as the UK's inaugural City of Culture.

You really couldn't make shit like that up. I haven't laughed so much at
anything in ages. They don't even know what to call it.
I wonder if they will have a nice wee riot, a few murders perhaps or
possible the "Dissidents" will plan another Omagh.

For anyone who has managed to stay away from the place, it's a stinking
festering shithole. But OTOH it makes the choosing of Liverpool look good.
It makes Liverpool look as good as Rome (1).

    (1) No YTC it is NOT ;o)

It has more living Nobel literature laureates than the rest of the UK.

Cheltenham it isn't. I didn't think you were a big fan of factionalism,
    xenophobia, racism and hatred.

We trenched through the city, literally from the Bridge in through to the
RoI border. It was an anxious time. There was no guessing how many bodies we
    were going to unearth...

We managed to avoid the bones and fortunately none of our contractors were
killed by the guy who opened up with an AK47 in the High Street.

Never make the mistake of thinking you're unique. When I had a green '99
model Bandit 1200 and started posting to the SUKBOG mailing list, it
confused a few people who thought I was the other person with my name
    and a green '99 model Bandit 1200.

John Hume was certainly a good man. But....

Surely the point of being recognized as a cultural centre is that you
    have achieved rare things.
    I very much doubt it.

There are benefits to having a spectacularly stupid name.

Yours is pretty tame compared to the Beckett Fish I know. We also have a
    M. Assman in our French office.

No, because Derry is a city of culture because it can produce them,
not because they (he) live(s) there.

Recent family tree investigations have turned up a Mr Claud Hampton,
who I assume was a failed lion tamer.

To further emphasise my cockernee heritage, I've also unearthed a
    certain Daisy Roots.

    Who lived in Wiltshire.

    WTF are you on about?
Whereas in all the times I've been there I've never seen(1) a gun let alone one
    being fired.

When I first took my OH to Derry there was an AA tourist sign saying 'Famine
150'. When I pointed out that she might like to go see the exhibition she said
"I know about the famine in Ethopia, its been on the news".

It was a little humour based on the fact my company dug a deep trench right
through the city, laying telecoms duct.
It's history is well enough known. As is the dividing line. FFS they can't
    even agree the name.

I wasn't trying to start a conversation about the Troubles, it was an
observation about the whole City of Culture thing. Something easily
misunderstood. I assume it isn't a celebration of cultural heritage but an
attempt to improve a shithole. I'm basing my assumption on the few I know
    of. Glasgow, Liverpool and now...

It did seem to have a positive effect on Glasgow. I lived there at the time.
But what rankled was people trying to maintain it was *already* a great
    place.
