Overfilled with oil - what to do?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Dave Jennings, Jul 16, 2005.

  1. Arse. This morning I'd changed the oil in the VS, and being brain
dead/hungover put in the full 5l instead of the 4l of oil I was
supposed to. Is is that big a deal, or should I drain the extra off
just to be safe? Is too much oil as bad as too little?

Get it out. Too much oil can lead to foaming (not good) and/or the
excess going up the crankcase breather into the airbox & getting sucked
into the top-end (hydraulic lock = bent valves/conrods).

A turkey baster down the fill hole[1] is your friend.

    [1] No, that isn't a euphemism.

A Mytivac does the job nicely too, if you have one. They are also
useful for bleeding brakes and filling forks with oil to the correct
    level.

Use an angle grinder to cut a slot in the crankcase.

If you cut the slot horizontal at the fill level you will never need to
    worry about overfilling again )

You risk the additional crankcase pressure blowing seals as well as oil
being sucked into air box. The quick way to solve it is by draining the
surplus out via the sump plug into a clean bowl, then put it back in to
    the correct level.

Good idea Mr. Monz. It would also be useful when racing, just lean the bike
    into a bend and...

What is the dipstick telling you? (I mean the one in the engine, not Kyle)

Personally, I don't think 1l will do any harm.

I would definitely drain some off if its that much over the top...... maybe
1/4 or even 1/2 but a litre over..... drain it and sleep better ! will
    only take a few moments

I overfilled a car once. I managed to get some distance befre I was engulfed
in choking clouds of blue smoke. I was in the centre of town and the
    pedestrians
were unamused too. Drain some out.

  16. As the 4l means "fill from bone dry" and there's likely to be still half
a litre swilling around inside it after an oil drain, it's probably
one-third overfilled. Drain the excess now.

  17. I agree with Nick, 1 litre over is much too much (that's 25% more, isn't
    it?).

You may get oil in your air filter, rendering it useless. Oil may leak past
your crankshaft rear oil seal, and get on your flywheel and clutch pressure
plate (resulting in clutch drag). Oil may leak past your valve guides,
causing increased carbonisation of combustion chambers, etc...

    Have I frightened you? Good!

Heh, I did this on the 12R. The spec said 4L, so I dropped in 4L. (it
was a filter off job too)

It was rather full ! but not way more than over the window.

Got me there and back to Chimay.

    Which was nice

The pukka Kawasaki manual for the 7R quotes 3 quantities:
    - oil change
    - oil and filter change
    - dry engine.

I'm in pain here remembering Shane and the K1100 who interpreted a black
sight glass as still needing oil. I drained about 8L out of the 4L sump
