OT/WTD: Linux Herder

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Dr Ivan D. Reid, Feb 12, 2008.

  1. Those of you who have some idea of how to herd Grid clusters might
    want to check this ad:

    http://www.brunel.ac.uk/about/job/cdata/professional/DCL0182-1

Half-tempted to apply myself, I could do with a pay rise! I hear
that there have already been several enquiries.

Will you tell your web monkeys that the HTML entity code for GBP is
    £ [1]

    [1] Note the semi-colon - they haven't.

  3. D'you want me to tell them that sentences usually have verbs and
    subjects, too?
To which they'll reply, "It works in Internet Explorer 6!"[2]

Have you done tonight's Windows Upgrade yet?

[2] I presume; I use IE7 where it works. We're still not cleared to use
IE7 at work due to problems with intranet pages.

Really? That's interesting[1]. I will have a play with entities the
next time I am near a copy of IE.

[1] For bored on a Tuesday night values of interesting, that is.

  5. Why bother? It would only confuse them.
But it does not jbex in Firefux or Opera. Moreover, is it not rather
ironic that an advert for a Linux nerd was written in a way that only a
    Micro$oft browser could render correctly?

In which county is the city of Brunel?

  6. I shall point that out to John Morse forthwith. I wonder if that
    was a test?
Going back for a booster at the w/e.
North Heathrow. It's officially Middlesex, that whispy myth of hereabouts.

Quite. I let it pass because the shed argot is unique unto itself. Who
knows if that sort of thing is acceptable there.

  15. Well; from my experience (is that OK?) we don't do jbex unrotted, nor

So... what was the job again? And why would one want that job, in an

Zbarl ? Because all your tools do it that way and you've learnt in an
environment where everyone tells you that's how you do it and you don't know
any better, and why would you if you're doing what you're told & trggvat
    cnvq for it ?

The web's becoming broken. I see a steadily increasing proportion of
"content" which is pointers to stuff that isn't available without extra
platform-specific binaries that aren't necessarily available for all
systems, or have incompetent broken installers, and "they jbex on mine, who
cares about yours, get yerself a _proper_ wossname, like mine" and all the
    old tedium.

  19. Our Grid presence is entirely divorced from the rest of the Uni,
especially from Human Resources. They probably don't even know what the Grid
is (or Linux!), have no idea what CERN is, and barely know that we exist.

I see. In that case, 'tis pity I know hooter-all about Grid except for

    day.
