My laptop runs Windows 7 and is set to update automagically.
Last night, and tonight, it did the usual "Installing updates, do not
turn off" then at power on, "please wait, installing updates 0%
complete" but it never progresses beyond 0%. After a short while disc
activity ceases and the machine hangs.

Re booting into safe mode and restoring to an earlier point recovers
everything but if I leave updates on it just hangs at next reboot.

It appears to be installing an new version of Silverlight

    any clues?

I'd delete the existing version of Silverlight and do a fresh install of
    the latest one.

Incidentally, windows update hung on my netbook yesterday. It's got XP
though. I killed the session, rebooted the netbook and it completed the
    update on the 2nd attempt.

Mine did the same, but a reboot into safe mode cleared it just fine.
If it is a silverlight update, try a manual uninstall and upgrade while in
    safe mode, then reboot.

It's not worth killing yourself over.

    nicknoxx wibbled forthrightly:
Seems to be a known problem. I had the same too. The restore hung and I
had to reboot into safe mode then reboot again into normal mode.

Looks like it is Siverlight causing the problem.
