TBH they're still plod, even with the new uniform. I'm looking for private
    contractors for specialist work.

  9. It depends. Electric *bicycles* are legal on the road - no ned for
licence etc, but you have to be aged 14. However, bicycles must comply
with the relevant British Standards (reflectors, brakes etc).

Find an electric scooter that complies with BS for bicycles.

PeterT bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along the
    lines of:

Ages ago (well, pre my DAS) I took my lad and his mate to one of those
    Bikesafe do's.

One of the attractions was scooter riding sessions for teenagers (which the
    young-uns enjoyed).
Chap doing the scooters also had a range of tradional styled (Lambretta /
Vespa-esque) scooters which were fully electric.

They looked the part and seemed to go okay, but I have never seen 'em since.

....or the pavement... or anywhere really, depending of course, on how
    pedantic your local constabulary are.

One of the grease monkeys of the place where I get my cars maintained, got
banned for drink driving on one earlier in the year, the silly ****.

Hmmm, didn't electric vehicles of less than a certain weight and of a
design speed of less than 15MPH used to be exempt? remember the
Sinclair C5, for example. They may not be nowadays, though.

    Certain ones were.
Yup... I had one or two... but to be fair I was riding illegally, as I was
    only 13 at the time.

The main thing with those, is they're classed as an 'electrically assisted
pedal cycle' - if it has pedals and is desined to not exceeed 15mph under
its own steam, then it's legal to use for those aged 14 or over.
