OK, I twist the octagonal topped grey plastic tube thing anti-clockwise.
The round plate job turns with it until the arrows are not quite 180
degrees from where they started (just like in the how -to video on the
Bosch web site). Then the tube, plate and round filter should pull out
as a unit and release the rectangular mesh filter no? On mine ,the tube
pulls away from where it clips on to the round plate. I am sure a little
judicious prising should free the plate but I don't want to bodge it.

The silly thing is that it works OK anyway. The filter is not actually
    blocked. IIWDFI.

You rotate the assembly anti-clockwise by about one-third of a turn. The
arrow that's at 6 o'clock should be at 2 o'clock when the thing stops
turning. At this point, the whole assembly should lift out freely.

Are you trying to turn it further - say, against resistance?
Does the plate hit a positive stop at the 2 o'clock position?

The plate/filter tube assembly holds the rectangular plate down. The
locking flanges for the round filter tube are on the bottom, right down in
the hole. There's nothing to pry at the top of the tube.
Best time to sort this type of thing out. DAMHIK,IJK,OK?

The bearings have been rough (now they've become rough and v. noisy); the
door hinge broke a month ago when I was doing the juggling of the
crashing plates and now it refuses to spin.

Sorted. Peering down in to the bottom I could see the locking flanges
and that they were disengaged. I could see that the rectangular filter
plate looked slightly uneven. Plan A revisited. A sharp knife at the
corner of the rectangular plate and a bit of a twist and lever knowing
that everything really was unlocked. Out it popped. Hardly needed
cleaning anyway. All restored to position carefully and hopefully will
be easier next time. Perhaps the rectangular filter plate is slightly
deformed and binds in the mounting recess.

Anyway thanks for the second opinion (and also the moral support from
    Ali). UKRM FOAK strikes again.
