Our bog standard Hotpoint has died after 7 years service.

What to replace it with? Cheapish as I'm a skintflint.

    More important, what to avoid?

Any supplier recomendations must be able to deliver as I don't think I
can fit it on my pedal bike and we'll need it before the end of
December. Or anyone in Brighton with a car licence want to drive me
and my Saab to the washing machine shop?

Very pleased with our Zanussi ZWF 1630W

As you're pikey strongly suggest you get one with a AA economy wash
option, especially if you're on a water-meter. Techonogy has moved on
an awful lot in 7 yrs, you'll save the extra outlay many times over in
    unused leccy and water.

Supplier? Use kellkoo and find the cheapest delivered price.

Died in what way? Shocks tore out of the bottom of the casing, or just the
brushes in the motor needing replaced?

We replaced ours with one of John Lewis' finest:

Actually, we have a 1201, which I think must be the previous version. It's
fine, and a lot less rumbustious than the old Hotpoint.

I bought a Servis about 2 years ago, cheap as chips and (touches wood)
never given me anything but good service
    Argos deliver free.
Bugger, I was in Burgess Hill yesterday but that's not much good because
    we don't have phone numbers.

The average life span of white goods is 5 years so get something quiet
    that matches your lino.

It was round about 3 Dec 2006 08:08:49 -0800,, when the famed sweller
of the dreaded http://groups.google.com was struck by a sudden
    insight:
I got an Indesit WIA 101 from Currys, http://www.currys.co.uk about 18
months ago when our Hotpoint died.
I was glad when the Hotpoint pegged it: I don't think I've ever had a
noisier washing machine, and I've sworn never to buy another Hotpoint
appliance again. But I'll probably forget I said that when the
    salesman spiel starts ... ;-(

The Indesit isn't posh, but it's cheap: about 180 quid. I've had zero
problems with it, except the slightly weird having to press 2 buttons
to start it off. And Currys deliver, and if you pay extra, they'll
cart the old one off for you.

Oddly enough my 13 year old Indesit just did the same, mid wash, last
    night.

I'm probably going to buy another.

  10. Or Siemens, same kit, different label. Bosch is superb, ime. So too is
Miele; they do 25 year lifetime tests.

  11. I've had Hotpoint, Electrolux, Zanussi, Creda and all of them were ok,
but a bit crap. The current Bosch has lasted 5 years so far and is as
good as new, but it understeers like a bastard on RH bends, though.

  12. Daft Lad. By the way, on suppliers, I'd look for a Euronics one - these are
local independent shops who buy in bulk. Price is usually similar to pikey
places, but the service is far better. Our local one delivers at a set time,
installs things and take away the old kit.

    What's died ?

wire come off, control board, motor brushes, clogged pump ?

You could be looking at a few quid to fix it

  16. I used to work in Comet - never had anyone come back whining about any
Bosch kit they'd bought, whereas Hotpoint / Hoover were troublesome
    shite.

So when we needed a new washing machine about eight years ago, I took
my own advice and bought Bosch.

Works as well as the day we bought it, and it's never gone wrong.

Not bad considering we were flogging it to death with a constant flow
    of grubby toddler clothing, initially.

You don't happen to have a Bosch Classixx dishwasher do you? I just
discovered a tiny 'issue' with ours. The filter won't come out (it used
to and I know the drill). Very rarely needs cleaning given SWMBO's
insistence on a full plate scrape and rinse before loading, but on
trying to do a proactive clean today the thing refuses to come free. I
shall resist assistance from a nice sharp knife and phone the Bosch FOAK
    tomorrow.

    I've got one.
This is the grey thing that you normally twist and it comes straight out?
    What's it doing?

  20. I wondered that. Mine normally comes straight out, if you'll pardon the
    expression. WD40?
