Went to see Closer last night

    Empire synopsis and review here:
    http://www.empireonline.co.uk/site/incinemas/ReviewInFull.asp?FID=10565

As it's based on a play, it's rather stagey, but not to its detriment.
The basic four-handed cast are all stellar, and all very good - Clive
Owen particularly. If you want to see/hear some quality british
    swearing, he's your man

Rather brutal tho - by the end of it, I felt like I'd been through the
    wringer

    Recommended.

  3. I'll definitely second City of God. The start (with the chickens) is superb.
Yeah, I saw that last night. Regardless of the fact that it's not quite as
good as some of their previous efforts, it's still a very good film well
    worth watching.
    Hmm...sounds potentially schmaltzy to me.

I have never seen a film try so hard to look arty and intelligent without
taking the radical step of actually throwing something artistic or
    intelligent into the mix.

I would rather have saved my ukp5.60 and just contemplated my navel in my
    own time, thanks.

The cast are superb, it's just a shame that they aren't given any plot to
advance or moral to impart and the whole thing seems to end when the
director looked at his watch and said, "Right, that's long enough.
    Everybody can go home now".

The only reason I can think of for anybody to go and see this film
(especially as you don't see as much of ms. Portman as I hoped you might) is
if you're trying to impress a 1st year film student, but unless she is
_seriously_ fit she's probably not worth it for having to spend hours
pretending that "Closer" had some kind of deep meaning.

    b. Not only do I own a copy of "Lair of the White Worm", I actually like

    critic.

Perhaps not if you all had my tastes
For a definitive ruling - where do you stand on "Sky Captain and the
    World of Tomorrow"?

for kids. Interesting /production/ though, and nothing wrong with
    Angelina Jolie in an eyepatch.
I'd sum it up as "mildly enjoyable hokum".

    True enough.
Hmmm. I just found it *so* wooden, and the script was completely
    risible.

do you realise it was supposed to be a spoof/pastiche of 1930s
    RKO-style sci-fi serials, don't you?

Well, I thought it more of a homage to them. If it was meant to be a
spoof, it should have been funny.

Could always top up with a visit to Cold Mountain. It's worth it just for a

Does Ms. Portman feature in that?

So, do you reckon Star Wars III is going to be rubbish or good?

    Sure does.
How much do you care about my opinion of a film that hasn't come out yet?

Given that the previous two were rubbish, what do you think?

Ah, but the lovey-dovey stuff is over with, there's not going to be a happy
ending, Anakin should have moved from "sulky teenager" to "evil overlord"
and there shouldn't even be that much politics to wade through.

I really do think it might work.

Hijack: those folks at CapAlert aren't too bright, are they?

    Of "TeamAmerica World Police":

"If the projection of this film is anti-left, it makes no sense why
Stone and Parker had to throw vulgarity at Jesus."

    "anti-left"?

I've not seen it. It's quite probable that CapAlert have misinterpreted
it but Trey Parker and Matt Stone have had a fall out with Sean Penn and
the American "liberal-left" are a barn door for satirical endeavour.

[Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow]
ah. The best bit of it for me, was that I found it very funny.

Didn't you spend several years of your life watching Flash Gordon
re-runs after school, before tea, on BBC2?
