    I've said it's bollocks and it is. There were no troops, just a bunch of
    useless bastards who were rounded up quickly.

  6. I do love this site more for what it doesn't say. Like the fact that the
    US admiral in charge, King, was utterely useless and refused the advice
    of the British to convoy ships.

    Eventually he was pressured to convoy ships and this helped. Oh, and not
    having a blackout meant tht targets were beautifully illuminated against
    the coastline at night.

    Secondly, it has the size of the submarines attacking the US wrong. They
    weren't 500-tonners. The Type VIIC, the standard German boat at the
    time, displaced about 1000 tonnes, but they didn't have the range for
    this operation so Type IX boats were used, which were even bigger.

    Finally, the author of the piece seems unaware that the operation was
    better known as Operation Paukenschlag (Drumbeat).

    In short, it's the usual US blinkered view.
