How can you trademark a date?

Why does stuff from the US have loads of trademark, er, markers all
over them? Harley is a right old offender for this.

It just makes me think "wankers" and doesn't little for me to mentally
protect their precious brand image - what it may do in a court is
perhaps a different question but it's not as endemic here in the UK
and we seem to be as litigious as the US.

They're doing it with patents as well: US firms are patenting genes,
even though they haven't invented them: merely discovered and isolated
    them.

The US will let people trademark anything. It's a bit different over here.
