They do something similar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Or used to
    - down the hill-climb section. A lot of the Formula One teams have
entered vehicles and rumour has it that the R&D expended, purely in
spare time, of course, would fund a few months' racing.[/QUOTE]

Saw it a few years ago. It's a bit surreal, these tiny vehicles
travelling almost silently down the track.

That year, there were two rival teams, Bentley and, err, forget the
other, who had carts that took design cues from their respective
    marques. very close race, IIRC.

Only been once but *must* do it again.

Easy. Saw it in half at the broadest part, then fit a looong
    uniform-section middle.

It would just need rows of running lights (say, one per rowlock) and
a boomerang antenna on the stern and Hey Presto! a stretch dinghy.

  5. ISTR that after the first year, when they all started at once and had
some spectacular crashes, they let them off in pairs and timed them.

But I had a feeling that they knocked the race on the head recently.
    Anyone know for certain?

    Pip Luscher says...
Ukrm has had a poster in the recent past who was on the design team that
built the last Lotus car to win a race. OK, so it was a soapbox car
built for the Goodwood race, but impressive all the same.

I have actually done this race once. It's total shit.

Actually, it's fun for the first half hour, then boring, then fun again as
you go past the houses of parliament and all the tourists. Then total shit
for the last 6 miles through the wasteland that is near-east London

About the fastest way to do it, if you're good.

It's a really, really long way though.

  9. We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember TOG@toil,

    That No.11 is terrific.

    The rules:

"In addition to the rowers, or paddlers, each boat must, at all times, carry
a cox (who need not steer but must not row/paddle while coxing) and a
    separate passenger."

We might be able to use a blow-up doll[1].

    [1]not all at once, obviously.
