Looks fairly sensible, dunno if price is competative, we've got one here on
the same reg with 230,000m on the clock.

We have a Fester as a pool car at work. Horrid little thing. The screen
seems so close and makes me feel a little cramped.

    Fiesta
    Polo
    Corsa
    Civic
    Micra

Civic/Micra will be the most bullet proof, Polo the most expensive,
    Fiesta and Corsa average.

SWMBO and I had two Clios (not at the same time) and loved them to bits.
The 1.2 petrol was great, the 1.9D was even better on the open road but,
lacking power-steering, was a bugger to park - upper body workout anyone?

  10. Plus - I don't think Kathryn will be joining the Harlem Globetrotters (Ladys

Noted ta. My mother manages to be a complete maniac in her micra so i
    suppose I could consider one.

Three grand is a fairly dangerous area, you can get good cars for that
money, but it's borderline already for major heaps.
They're a bit more than three grand these days anyway :)
So you want something a little bigger than a G-Wheeze then...
Depends on your mileage - if you buy something pre-2001 (before the new
tax regime came in), the difference is 65/quid year. I'd try to work
from the running cost side of things instead.
Sensible motors would probably include anything with a Honda badge (I'd
try to find some pensioner's low-mileage Accord, according to Andy
Hewitt they're pretty much the same fuel consumption wise as a Civic,
but cheaper to buy), another Toy-ow-ta or a Nissan.

Come to think of it, a mate of mine has a fresh import Honda S-MX for
sale which is quite a funky small MPV with *oodles* of space for it's
size. Engine and consumables are Honda Accord but the bodywork would
have to come from Japan if you hedged it. It's a bit above your budget
but I'm sure he'll knock a little off if it saves him the trouble of
advertising it. Actually, if I were *finally* going to buy something
sensible, I probably would've bought it off him already.

I occasionally have a Micra as a discourtesy car and I wouldn't want to
drive it on a 300 mile roundtrip, the 200 mile roundtrip I have to
drive that on is more than enough. Decent car though.

Other options that cost peanuts to run would be something like an early
to mid nineties Mercedes 250D or 300D, if you can find a decent one.
Parts for these are mega cheap, they're easy to work on (so cheap
labour from the local mechanic) and the Diesels aren't that thirsty
either. The estates in particular are really good day-to-day cars. I
like them, I've had a few and I'd buy another one if I would feel the
    need for one.

Unfortunately the late 90s Mercs have a well deserved reputation for
rusting, otherwise they'd probably make a good buy. Come to think of
it, your money would probably buy you a decent C250 Turbodiesel Estate,
and that's one of the cars from that period that isn't affected that
    much by the rust.

Fair comment, and on a sub 1000 banger, if the brain goes you probably
buy another banger. Once you pay 3000, it becomes more of an issue. Not
likely on a VAG example perhaps.

Worth pointing out that at least with a Skoda badge, not all 1.4 petrol
units are equal, in fact aren't some of the early ones based on the old
pre-VAG 1.3 8v motor (though not necessarily a bad thing perhaps).

    Hoho.

It's a perception thing. My C2 is not exactly large but the slope of the
screen gives the impression of being in a larger car.
