OT Time for a different car then

    Sorry salad dodger.

Toyota has effectively died, see other thread.

I have £3,000. I have need of a car. My previous car ownership has
consisted of old bangers including a battered mini (my first love) an
Ital, a shite old sunny called Sidney, a proton, a Mark 2 golf and
    then the Toyota.

My only decent car (BMW CSi with the shark nose bonnet) my ex husband
wrote off and I swore then not to have anything I'd get attached to.

It will be used for bimbling about shopping and 300 mile round trips
    down south.

It would be sensible to get a 1.4 litre to get the lower tax bracket I
    suppose.

I have no preference on make or model. I have no clue about cars. I am
currently incapable of rational thought any way. (**** off, yes you, I
    heard you think that)

    Help.

    Nice little Land Cruiser, m'am?

Fifteen hundred because it didn't go on Fleabay and I'm sick of looking
    at it?

It's even got as little folding plastic step so you could get up into
    it.

Get another Mk2 Golf. Gti 8v I reckon. Enjoy the money that you have left
    over.

    My gf and I bought a 97 plate polo 1.4cl last jan. £1500 bought us a 2
door with power steering/electric windows/electric mirrors and all in
all we have found it a well put together and capable car - its good on
fuel and cruises happily on the motorway.

Not a GTI - you can pick up a nice Driver for a lot less and it's
likely to be in far better condition.

Actually, unless it *has* to be a hatchback, a Jetta or Vento would be
a far better choice IMHO. *Massive* boot compared to a Golf and cheaper
    to buy as well.

You can have my Volvo for that, if you come over here to collect it.

If you need something to tide you over and give you time to make a
sensible decision, you could borrow the old Pug.

306 XLD very high miler but reliable (unless not used for a couple of
weeks in which case it sometimes needs the battery freshening - could be
the central locking loom in to the door playing up).

When it comes to its next MoT in May it is going to be interesting if it
manages to get through for a third time without any work.

The problem with a 3000 quid car is that it will probably take you in to
the area of modern ECUs and sensors and such like.

There is much to be said for an old school diesel (not even a turbo to
blow up) free from any brain whatsoever.

They still made the 306 1.9D as late as 2001 and they would be well
    within your price range.

No ball of fire away from the lights, but they will easily cruise at
realistic motorway speeds once you get there. 45 mpg and group 1
    insurance.

Hmm, but I suspect you were thinking of something more glamorous.

Watch out advertsing standards will be onto you.
    It's a gas guzzling monster.
I'd need a block and tackle.

Fails on the huge gas guzzling criteria. Though I will have to come
over and visit at some point.

Averaging nearly 28mpg with our current driving (much 100-120kph
motorway work at weekends). Huge I'll grant you, but I can't see how
    that could be a problem.
Sure. Open invite and all that. If anyone wants to pop down after a
    TOG-tour they'd be very welcome.

I may well take you up on that, ta. This is a right pain, ebay, car
auctions, auto trader. I just want a car to miraculously appear.
Oh yes, I hadn't thought of that.
Indeed. I loved my toyota :(
Another one to add to the list.

My last car was an X reg Seat Ibiza (Spanish made Polo with generally
better spec. for the same money). It had a 1.4 litre petrol engine and went
fine. You should be able to pick up something similar for £1500. There was
a facelift in 2002 and you should be able to pick up one in very nice
    condition for your £3000

Nothing to do with size, has that. The Volvo's a damn sight easier to
park than Jude's 206cc - much better visibility and it's quite clear
    where the corners are.

Not that I'm seriously trying to persuade you.

With the smaller cars e.g. Ibizas, Polos etc you get the modern ECUs etc on
£1200 cars. In the 7 years I had my Ibiza the only faults were temperature
sensors on the Auto Environment Control for the aircon and a radio that
turned itself on at random. I ignored the former and set the controls
manually and the latter was easily circumnavigated by removing the fuse
    when parking the car overnight.
