I'll chip in with Wyrd Sisters. Even though the plot was written by
someone else, the characters are excellent.
    Nor I.

Assuming he was living in 30's America during his teens. It's a book that
has lost all context. Moby Dick. Now *thats* a proper book and still of
relevance to people today who have lost limbs to large white whales.

  6. Captain Corelli's Mandolin for example. Nowhere near as good a book as
L de B's crazy romps around South america, IMHO.

I read this for the first time recently and it didn't do much for me
either (and I read loads of fiction). I get the feeling from others,
like LOTR, its something you need to read when you're young/teenage.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I read loads of books - not as
many as I did before going to work made me too tired to read all
night, but a fair few. But the books that have stuck in my mind most
*are* the ones I read in my youth - Swallows and Amazons, LOTR (I've
never managed to re-read it), The White Dragon, Catch-22, Clan of the
Cave Bear, Bio of a Space Tyrant... I don't know why that is - but if
I was asked to name my top ten books I'd probably struggle to recall
anything of real impact I've read in the last five years.
One series I've re-read again and again is Julian May's Saga of the
Exiles. Oh, and The Silver Brumby series :~)

Personally I don't care what people read - just as long as they read
(and if it's something I find boring, as long as they don't read it to
    *me*).

LOTR seems popular at the moment with those who do whatever they are
told to by the media ... though I spose that makes them mentally
teenage even if chronologically they are far older :)

Like ****. Better written than I'm ever going to do, but that was it.
I enjoyed that, several times. I find that it can really make beleive
    that you are there.

I must admit to a weakness for the last two: Night Watch, and
Monstrous Regiment. Well, maybe not the second one, as it faded badly
    in the home straight.
To his credit, I don't get the feeling that TP'd disagree, either.

    I could be wrong, mind.

That was my O-level set text. I made a point of not reading it at the
time, having told my English teacher[1] that, afaiwc, Eng. Lit. was a
load of cobblers. I didn't tread Julius Caesar either, or any poems.
The fact that I still managed an "E" grade merely served to "prove" to
me how worthless the exam was[2]. There were kids in my class who'd
worked their butts off, and got a "U". How, ffs?

[1] Also my form teacher, rugby coach, and Air Training Corps Officer.
[2] I've "matured" a bit since then, and can sometimes read "made-up
stuff" for hours at a time.
