BBC2 have dramatised The Rotters' Club. Set in B'rum in 1970ish.

    Scary hair & clothes.

It's only been on a few mins and I've had some horrible flashbacks to
    clothes I wore.

Tank tops, check jackets, dralon furniture.....

I thought the Marches were bits of England that were defended
    to keep the Welsh out.

Did anyone else recognise "Tales From Topographic Oceans"
before the youth mentioned the title?

And with one simple omission at the very beginning, they bugger up
    the connection with the sequel.

    Nice!

Eiron emerged from their own little world to say
marches: district consisting of the area on either side of a border or
boundary of a country or an area; "the Welsh marches between England and
    Wales"

I was brought up in and around Monmouth[1] and until recently lived
either side of the border. I don't particularly identify with English or
Welsh as a nationality. I tend to use Welsh Marches to describe my
affinity with the Herefordshire/Monmouthshire border area.

[1] until 1974 Monmouth was neither part of England or Wales. I have a
map that is titled "England, Wales and Monmouthshire".

It was interesting to watch, having now read The Closed Circle and knowing
how the characters turn out later in life. Paul Trotter and Harding in
    particular.
Like an episode of The Grimleys scripted by Sweller.

    Priory St, with Geoffrey's Window.

No longer a YHA. Now some sort of holistic therapy centre.

    What years?

I was there for its last 2 years, 1970-2. They built new schools in the
suburbs and went co-ed. I spent my last 2 years of primary school in what
    was the "Overmonnow girls school".

yep was there then, then we was moved up to the other school that
looked like a school near the roundabout and had to walk down the road
    for the dinner shed.

I can't remember any names from there, I was only there a short while,
We was bugged out of Libya when Gaddafi took over so we stayed with my
    Nan for a few months.

I also went to some small infants school behind where she lived when I
was even younger. It has/had a big brick wall around it with broken
glass concreted into it. Always reminded me of a WW2 prison camp.

We used to live in the houses on the other side of the river by the
Chippie. Near the tunnel, well opposite that water pipe thing that
went across the river. I remember them building that.

Darts the Butchers was a few doors down if that helps :)

Cinderhill St. Not far from where I lived in Victoria Estate. They've
finally built the new bridge next to that pipe. Only took them 40 years.
The Norman bridge is now pedestrian only.

Like most butchers, Darts is no more. All of the shops have been knocked
    into one Londis IIRC.

Thats the place :) used to go a play a lot and hang around at the top
    by the old tractor.

And the open air pool they had. I had a mate who lived in the house
    where the garage is now.

If you've read The Rotters Club, then it's very good in a closure
(circular) sense, though heavy handed in the usual Coe stylee.

Well worth a borrow from the library, if not the hardback price.
You're old enough to google, you know.
