  5. Odd. I thought that BR (as then was) wouldn't allow construction to take
place over tunnels that were shallow like that one.

Whatever; it's fairly clear the project engineers are in for a bit of an
    arse kicking.

Oo err. You don't get much idea of the scale until you reach
the fourth picture. That's a big hole that is.

The tunnel is being built over the line is order to provide a bit of
land to put a new shop on. It used to be a cutting.

  14. there is a thread going on here

    http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk...98dac72c714/a64262cfd057e042#a64262cfd057e042

the theory seems to be that they dumped earth on the top but not at the
sides. This caused an overload on the top with no compensating pressure
from the sides to push the "join" together at the top. All fascinating
    stuff really.

I sort of have a secret desire to see the supermarket disappear down the
hole too but that (probably) won't happen. The locals don't really want
this huge Tescos but Tesco have deep pockets when it comes to building
their stores. Looks like they might have to dig a bit deeper on this
    <groan> ;-)

As you say someone is going to pay - you've got the combination of
Network Rail, Chiltern Trains and Tesco all ready to sue the arse off
someone. I wouldn't want to the supervising engineer or construction
    contractor.

  15. As others have said it's a new tunnel. Network Rail will allow anything
if it makes them money and you can be sure that they've tried to extract
as much money as possible from Tescos.
From several sets of people I would imagine.

Yer not wrong. I suspect some fairly uncivil questions have been
    asked already.

  17. Now they've got a cutting. It would have been cheaper to go for a
    cutting in the first place.

  19. The fuckers. Passenger safety doesn't play a huge part in their ethos,
    by the looks of that.

No good ever comes of trying to make land - just look at the cloggies.
