It still is the case that a lot of "shop brands" packaging do resemble
"branded marks", but isn't part of the whole question that "branded
    marks" make "shop brands" too?

  2. Tescos in Canterbury were paying Kent Salads, their local supplier as
much for a tray of 48 lettuces as they sold one for. When Tescos wanted
to drop the price they were paying for them Kent Salads ploughed the lot
back in and said "Up yours" Tescos didn't sell Iceberg lettuces for over
a month until they could find another cheap supplier.

  4. There's a small but significant section in the Yiewsley Tescos
of "Asian" ingredients in "bulk" (2-5 kg bags of cumin powder, chick peas,
etc.). I'll leave you to guess why...

Sainsbury's pricing policy is insulting to my intelligence, and for
some own-brand items, they're by far the most expensive supermarket[1].
They also seem to be the worst for "Look! Cheaper than before! (very
    small text: 2p off a 3.99 item)".

They also are known for not being great employers.

They're also the worst offenders for putting out "buy one get one free"
signs, and then putting a very similar product, but not the one
actually on offer behind the sign (with the actually on offer thing
    stuck in a nearby corner).

Don't get me wrong, for some things - say, Indian & Italian ready
meals[2] - they're by far the best, but that doesn't stop them being an
    annoying place to shop.

    [1] for instance, tesco: 6 x 500ml bottle sparkling spring water: 1.49;
    Waitrose 6 x 500ml bottle sparkling spring water: 1.99; Sainsbury's 6 x
*330*ml bottle sparkling spring water: 1.99
[2] I don't buy much of these, but at least the stuff from Sainos is
    edible.

They (and others of their ilk) make so much profit that they could pay
the suppliers better and still make a huge profit.

I believe that making a profit is part of being in business. It's the
"unfair" profit that is the rub. Just been to a local off-license and by
the looks of the shelves it isn't going to be too long before they
close. That'll leave 1 independent offie in the high street. The variety
is decreasing in the 14 years I have been here. Now we have multiple
charity shops, curry houses, Chinese take-aways, pizza places,
hair-dressers, tanning and nail etc. but no fish-monger, one builder's
supplies, no greengrocer. Soon I can imagine just the local in-town
Tesco and not a lot else. I suppose I am expected to be thankful that
    the Tesco is not out-of-town.
I suspect it's a con. Not against the coffee growers but against us. We
are calculated to feel good about purchasing FT items so the store sells
them prominently and competitively by subsidising them. They have worked
out that, as a rule, we feel more compassion to a "developing world"
grower than a local one. I wonder how this works in Iceland where they
can grow bananas under glass in the geothermal greenhouses.

At least I bother to go out to get food and supplies.
Not order online from Slainsburys and get it delivered.

In any case, Morrison's looks nicer than Tescos, seems to have *slightly*
better supplies than Sainsburys and is far less Pikey than Asdas and Netto.

Yep. I have a bottle just here from Enflield. Just about £10 a bottle IIRC
which is something of a bargain in my book.

If it's cheaper elsewhere, please share.

  14. It must be tough living in an up-market neighbourhood. Around
here two of the three Tescos sell sparkling mineral/spring/tap[1] water at
19 p per 2-litre bottle. The third dispenses with the Value-brand item in
favour of the next-expensive "Ashbeck Mountain Spring" water at 47 p for 2 l.

Since my doctor recommends I drink at least 2 l of water per day[2],
I keep an eye on these things...

[1] Depending on time of year or something...
[2] Which is a bit silly, since she also has me on diuretics!

  15. Fucking priceless, imo. The robbing greedy bastards like Tesco were the
ones who paid peanuts to the 3rd world growers in the first place.

I'd agree that Tesco should pay more to local producers, commensurate
with returning a reasonable profit on items. The nasty manipulative
habit they have of screwing suppliers in years 2, 3 and 4 makes me
bloody angry with them. Tesco aren't alone in this, by any means, but
they have it down to a fine art and I despise them for it.

Oh, I know - it was only an example.

If it were for me, I'd buy the large, cheap bottles. Angie prefers the
smaller bottles, as she only wants about 1/2 a litre at a time, and so
    it doesn't go flat.
