  1. Actually, it was a diesel mechanic who put me on to it, for starting a very
    old diesel pump motor.

And he's a very good diesel mechanic.

As for me personally, I've found it very useful for getting two-stoke
engines that have been left sitting for >3 months started. One quick spray,
and they start first go, and then keep running fine (and restarting without
    the aid of it again).

Enlighten me as to why "absolutely no professional would use crap like
that"? And as to how you know this about all professionals?

    Hi James,

    In reply:-

The only time any ether based starting aid should be used on a compression
ignition engine would be in cold weather conditions. Generally sub zero
    centigrade temps.

It should only be used on a well maintained engine which is in good
    mechanical condition.

By using it to start a worn or poorly maintained engine, the user is just
masking any underlying faults with the engine.

There should be no need to use any form of starting aid on an engine if it
didn't come out of the factory with it fitted. The only exception being in
severe cold weather as mentioned above.

As to how I know this about all professionals. I didn't say I did know this
    about all professionals.
I actually said " Absolutely no professional would use crap like that !"

Perhaps I should have added. Worth their salt or some other similar phrase,
    before the exclamation mark.

Unfortunately as with all professions the ability and aptitude varies from
one to another. Personally I have only ever seen bodge it & scarper types of
so called professional mechanic use things like this.

I also don't mind them using it as it brings more work to my doorstep.

I'm also glad to see your using it very sparingly, though if you drained the
fuel from the carbie and or tank and used new fuel you wouldn't need to use
    it at all.

    Regards

Which is why it got used a lot on the old Fergie.

As the poor old thing was definitely old (late 40s) and probably poorly
maintained (it was a small tractor dammit, who maintains them?) and not
often used (only need it a few weekends a year on a hobby farm orchard),
Aerostart was very useful to get it going.

Never had to use it on anything else.

Big did try it on the Spada once, but even Aerostart doesn't work if the
    sparkplug goes on strike.

But in this particular engine, an engine rebuild would be several thousand
dollars. Not really worth it for a pump engine that gets used once a month
and only really has to see out the next 5-10 years.

Everything has their use. I agree it's not something that should be used
every day. (And I do drain the fuel etc, but 2-stokes are a little too black
magic for me. I'll stick to 4-stokes where I can see and understand how it
    all works.)

    Mark,
maybe you don't hang 'round here much these days but "**** Off Spammer
Bitch" is almost a mantra when someone advertises their business in
aus.motorcycles. (In fact people even rush over each other to be the first
    to say it).
Changing spammer to spanner and then using it to advertise the business is
literary genius (....or as close to literary genius as you're gonna' get
on usenet anyway!) and ought be acknowledged! (Nay CELEBRATED!)

But then again... I don't get out much.....

I agree that everything has it's uses.

My comments were made with the intention of hopefully preventing you from
using it to start any of your decent engines on a regular basis.

The old pump engine which is probably only used occasionaly more than likely
likes a good snort on it !

Recently I had the honour of fixing an old Honda XR80 which the owner had
been using start ya bastard to get going. Even after it was finally running
he said it wouldn't run properly.

He had put 2 stroke mix in the tank and the points were beyond salvation. A
quick drain of fuel and carbie clean. Followed by a new set of points and a
new plug and he's happily chugging around the paddock with his little boy.

The noise it makes when starting a compression ignition engine should give
you a clue as to how it works. You'll here one hell of a clatter as it
fires, this is because the ether mixture ignites far more readily than
diesel fuel. In effect this like advancing the ignition similar to an old
bike or car petrol engine with a manual advance/retard lever.

Ah I am enlightened oh snoorer to the stars !

Your right I don't hang around here much anymore. I never seem to have the
    time these days.

I shall maybe contribute more after the house is built, at present this is
computer room and babies room. Whilst I can still get away with the odd
night of grog and asscoiated noisy activities, I find my life far easier on
baby & mother fronts if I vacate his room at the time I'm told to !

    Hence my lack of contributions.

With that I must go coz it's time to hand over the room to the wee man.

    Cheers n all that

I got sick of vacating the room so I built in the garage andmoved all my
    crap into there.
Unfortunately the wimmens followed and now I'm back to being vacated again!
    (And I've lost my garage!!)

No doubt something very similar will happen to me.

Which is why I need to build the big shed with double locking mechanisms and
    an alarm system.

With just the one key which I keep about my person all the time...........Ah
well.....I can still dream I spose.
