As a poor student, I played that card with my 19 year old kid last month.
He's also a student but doing a mickey mouse course in college because he
was too lazy to get decent grades at A level. He's also got a part time
    job.

He was trying to persuade me to drive to Portsmouth to fetch him & his
girlfriend so they could see a band in Cardiff. This would be in December.
I got the virgintrains website up and started telling him how much the
tickets are and that he had 3 months to save his wages to pay for the
    tickets...

    Well done.

And if he books through trainline.com he'll get quidco cash back.

I don't intend to be out of the job market beyond the end of the year,
if that long. Bet I get a job before any of the other slackers as I'm
not reliant on the IT market.
Though now you come to mention it...
Shush, I've been trying not to crack and buy fags all day. Bad, bad,
bad cravings. Is there an equivalent of AA for smokers? Still if I'm
going to be an addict then there are worse things to pick.
We're both at the same party in November, I'll tap him for a loan
    then.

Trainline charge a booking fee when using a credit card. I usually use
Virgin or FGW as neither charge a booking fee, despite using the Trainline
website with their branding tagged on.

As I use a cashback credit card, the potential Quidco is offset by this
    cashback and the fee.

A good cook book. Not a "student" cook book, because they are invariably
patronisiong, and treat baked beans and tabasco sauce as staples. Plasters
and paracetamol, because 18 year olds are invincible.

Avoid any kind of card scheme - be it a voucher for a supermarket or the
cards for the refectory. The refectory ones are particularly bad, often
having their balances wiped at the end of each year, even if the balance is
several hundred quid because the uni food is mainly inedible.

If you do send money, make it some sort of termly or monthly allowance. That
fairly quickly reinforces the fact that if you piss it all up the wall,
    you're in the shit.
