What's a reasonable level of gin consumption?

That's easy - six to one, gin to vermouth.

Feck. We get through 3 bottles over the weekend, so 1.5 bottles each.
And very occassionally have one during the week as well.

Doing a bottle a day would be very hard work for me, especially on the
evenings that I'm out doing non-drinking things.

    Undoubtedly.

I'm drinking on fewer days of the week now. However, my overall consumption
seems to have remained static. I was being sated by a single bottle of wine
most evenings. Now, on the evenings I'm at home, I seem to get thirsty
whilst preparing dinner and crack open a bottle of ale or white wine.
Inevitably, around 9pm the cork comes out of another bottle.

Getting back on topic: you & Champ might like to note that Tesco's
promotion on the crack laced cheese, St Agur, ends tomorrow. Currently £1 a
    fix.

Vacuum sealing devices are good as well: have as much wine as you
enjoy and close the bottle properly before moving on to the single
    malt.

    Me too.

It's a really fucking big glass, though.

Wine in boxes has the exact opposite effect with me - there's not the
"Ah, I can't be bothered to open a(nother) bottle" deterrent factor...

    M J Carley ( (M J Carley)) gurgled happily, sounding much
    like they were saying:
The theory's sound, but in practice I find they fall foul of "Well, it's
not worth stoppering that little bit"

There are some decent-ish wine boxes available over here, and we quite
often have a box of white in the fridge, but it's by no means intended
to limit consumption - quite the opposite, if anything, as it means we
don't have to faff about getting the next bottle chilled.

Having said that, it's rare these days that I'll drink a whole bottle
to myself on a week night - must be an age thing, or general lack of
fitness, as it just cripples me the next day.

Then again, I was drinking a damn site more than that last week, and
after the first couple of days I was absolutely fine the next morning,
sometimes waking up before seven and starting to work on plans for the
day's ski groups 'n stuff, so p'raps either I'm getting fitter or it's
just a case of getting used to it again.

I was pleasantly surprised to find yesterday that I'm now down to 13.5
stone, having been up over 14 before christmas, so clearly all this
    skiing's doing me some good.

So long as it doesn't have a crown and a handle on it I think you're ok.

It's also hard to judge how much you've had, with a wine box - unless you
finish it at a sitting, of course.

  13. Mine doesn't. The handle bit anyway..

It's the mixer that's the problem. I can leave gin sitting around for
ages but if there's tonic about then it needs to be drunk.

See the Bryan Adams incident for details.

Top tip. If you have gaffa taped icepacks to the inside of a white
wine box to keep it cool, remember this fact when you test said wine
box for weight to gauge remaining contents and think 'we've had hardly
    any'.

Seeing as I'm not going to have to drive tonight what would be a good
time to pour the first G&T? I anticipate running out of gin before
tonic as I stocked up on that on Saturday.

Damn it, I'm out of lemons.

Cheat, squeezy lemon juice or local shop for either a lemon or a lime.
    Or some cranberry juice.
