    Easiest DFV ever.

Right you lot bring a big cardboard tube to the BOSM.

    There, done.

PS Ginge, I've got no sound, I know I did have sound because it makes
different beepy noises when you do something wrong. Sort of higher and
weaker. Not like the mighty 'STOP IT' noises of Win 2K.

And I don't like the tabs they confused me. You never told me about
the tabs. I wondered what it had done with my window and why the back
    button wasn't working.

Oh and the home house isn't where it should be. And without the
nicotine coating of the old the screen is all bright and shiny.

I'm not sure about it yet - how do I make it look like win 2k again?
And more importantly where's my volume control?

that's called "bel". there is a special device inside your pc (it's always
a pc) that is independent of your sound card and only makes that crap
    noise.

no, 21st century is when it's on your phone.

I found the volume control. It says I have no audio device attached.
The old pc didn't have a device attached and it managed fine.

Right, I'm a reasonably intelligent woman but I chose many years ago
to develop a Luddite attitude to actually knowing how things work. I'm
aware I have the ability to correct this, just not the inclination.
    Could make the time though.

So bearing in mind all the above, the following doesn't sound quite so
    pathetic as it is iyswim.

So how did my old pc make sounds and this one doesn't?
I'm a bit behind the times there as well. I've only had 4 different
mobile phones over about 10 years of mobile phone use. The battery in
the current motorola flip thing is really crap but I hate getting used
    to new technology.

At a guess, your old one had a sound card either fitted or integrated
into the motherboard. Your new one, apparently, doesn't. Which is
quite odd, as I thought they were pretty much standard on anything
    these days.

by audio device it means sound card. like i said, sound card and bel
(aka system beep) are different pieces of equipment and not related.

this is great stuff by the way, takes me right back to 1990.
if it made any noises other than "beep", then it did.
because ginge hasn't been poked enough to make it happen yet.

missing driver or broken driver configuration seems more probable.

Oh. I thought it meant being plugged into speakers or something.
Right so sound card and drivers - I shall go look and see.

Control panel (I've made it show icons again rather than a list)

legacy audio drivers location unknown this device is working properly
    audio codecs ditto
    media control devices ditto

I've had a quick look in device manager (which I've left as a list) it
has multimedia audio controller in other devices.

This doesn't actually tell me anything. I've retrieved the information
but it means nothing to me.
I can solve this. Probably. Or I can just wait until later with the
pub full of techies and ask them.

    I'm not *that* bad. Possibly.

He's not back yet or I wouldn't have had to ask here :)
Downloaded, unzipped, click on install, nothing happens. And it says
    win 2k.

I just went and found some drivers (all on my own!) and it told me
'this machine does not have a supported ac 97 interface'. Does that
mean I found the wrong drivers?

    Now what?

    PS Thanks.

    Either

    A) Wait for joe

    or

    B) You can find out the make and model of machine from the label on the
back.. go to the manufacturers website and download drivers. that link
was my best guess, but I'm still fairly sure it is the right link
    though.

I don't have time to be tech support at present.

He mutters that I could at least wait until he's in the door then
shrugs and says clicking install should work. And laughs that the
    computer is a 'terminator'.
Make and model finds same link but when click on install it doesn't do
    anything.
    <looks at ground, shuffles feet>

Sorry mister. My deadline is gone and it went well, yours will be
    fine.

In the meantime I'll keep fiddling.

I'm not struggling. I just don't see the point of it. Oh and the lack
of sound. Win 2K on a pentium 3 has done me fine for years. Thanks to
Mr Fisher the machine solely for typing is win 98 and that's fine as
    well.
    Maybe in 2050.

The irony being that it took me ages to get sound working on that old
Zydec because the twerps that passed for support for them (part of the
Evesham empire) sent the wrong drivers disc with it when I bought it,
and another wrong drivers disc when I contacted them. I tried to get the
correct ones direct from the motherboard manufacturers site and failed.
In the end I managed to get through to a techie who wasn't just doing a
Saturday morning job, who provided the correct driver.

Have you tried an 'update driver' from the device manager pointing to
the folder the files you got from the link posted up there unzipped to?

And now we just have to google. I heart the internet.
I got a man in. I think that's what he did. Matt said I was doing the
right thing with the wrong drivers and found specific rather than
generic drivers. I have sound. Woot.
