Train Drivers have had to carry two pairs ever since the ban on glasses
was lifted - about 1969 IIRC.

But why did they employ a lorry driver?

    Verdigris, Dec 22, 2004
  5. But how will that work when there are different limits for vehicles
using the same road at the same time?
I dont think they are clever enough to have a joined up plan.
It is not particulary efficient now. Far too much empty running.
But if haulage prices go up, everything else will follow.
Mmmm. I see where you are going, but a car can overtake a truck doing
40 in an NSL without breaking the speed limit itself. If that car
driver decides to overtake at an inappropriate moment and gets himself
or others killed, he will have done so within his speed limit. I dont
suppose it will stop 'them' from claiming speed was the cause though.

In case your glass break/lenses come out and get lost and you don't
have a spare. Still need to be able to function. I know I certainly
couldn't drive if even one of my lenses came out and I lost it.

  8. An expensive outlay but a worthwhile investment could be a GPS fixed
camera locator with radar and laser warnings as options.

I recently bought a fixed camera GPS thing and it really does work; the
one PITA is that when cameras disappear, like the roadworks between J5-7
on the M11 disappear, it takes ages for them to investigate and remove
    them from the database.

I dunno exactly, but the unit will have to have a map, it'll know what
sort of road it's on. The GPS can only tell you where you are, which is
useless without a map connected to it.
More like a plan a chicken has when someone chops it's head off then.
I had that in mind, if only for the fuel prices here.

I've had two pairs of specs break on me on nights away by bike.

First time I solved the problem by riding from Lichfield to London
with one eye closed, the second by wearing the wife's glasses on the
    journey back from Liskeard.

Neither is an experience I wish to repeat.

I'm about -8/-9 ish, so bats tend to take the piss of me.
Quite simple solution on the M1: slot in behind an artic, and stick
the cruise control to 90kph. Not an issue until I got to the A12/A13
junction at the blckwall tunnel, then I had to think about stuff.

I don't know about that, but it's worth a shot. I meant in terms of
getting a job when you've got a licence.
Sure, buzz me nearer the time.

  17. eh?
I think you miss my point.
    Take an ordinary NSL road.
A truck is going along it, bouncing on his GPS limiter at 40mph.
There is a car behind him, also with a GPS limiter, but his is set at
60mph for this bit of road.
He is mightily pissed off at being stuck behind this slow lorry,
deliberately holding him up, as he is allowed to do 60 on this road.
He goes for the overtake in a silly place, and BANG, grille ornament
on a 40 tonne logging truck coming the other way.

  18. I've got one. Origin Blue i mk1.
It got replaced under warranty in last Jan as it went fizz and let the
magic smoke out. Now the screen has gone tits up. I find that there
are too many false alarms and not enough real ones.
It was a very good bit of kit to start with though, but £400 is steep.

Isn't there a great BTC film about lorries on Shap and how some didn't
make it on the descent (cue footage of a rusting twisted cab and chassis).
