OT Speed cameras on A420

  1. Sounds like the last despatching outfit I was at. Petty rules and
regulations I could've lived with if the pay wasn't so dire.

In the way of training and passing a test you mean, with possible
    employment?

I'm not sure I want to know about the East End underground, I'd have a
problem with falsified documents etc and couldn't knowingly keep shtum
if I ever got tangled up in anything that would see me get into trouble
first; in fact, it's a whole can of worms I'd rather not open.

If you've got anything kosha then I'll keep it on file. This is just a
preliminary putting my feelers out thing at present and don't want to
    rush into anything.

How about wearing contact lenses and plain glasses for the test,
(which is just another manifestation of the evil empire.)

Wtf is the point of that? Specs (or contacts) wearers who need them
full-time wear them full-time and I see no reason for the uncorrected
    vision to be a factor.

Verging close to disability discrimination if one could be failed for
uncorrected vision while the corrected vision is within normal range.

  5. Two different things there.
I'll deal with the easy one first.
I stopped having to deal with this sort of thing about 5 years ago nad
there have been major changes since then, but this is how it used to
    be:
Any vehicle can be taxed as PLG, but that oc course means that it
    cannot carry goods.

If you disable or remove the fifth wheel you remove the capacity for
goods carrying so in theory its no longer a goods vehicle. ISTR some
trade plate drivers without HGV licences could drive a tractor unit
    without a fifth wheel.

You used to be able to drive a mobile crane on an ordinary car
licence, but that has now stopped, so I suspect all these other grey
areas have also been cleared up.

  7. No, there's a limit to the number of passengers you can take
(non-paying, of course). Eight or 11 or something. Minibus regs,
    basically.

EDIT: I see rb has posted the full griff.

  8. I thought about that, but they do a close-up inspection of your peepers
as well, so they'd spot the lenses.

*Also* - you can no longer get uncorrected glasses "over the counter".
Believe it or not, you have to have an eye test which says you don't
need glasses in order to be able to get them.

Trust me on this - I went to a lot of trouble to get my eyesight test,
because my eyes are so crap.

You could buy those very weak reading glasses they sell in Boots &
similar and use those, but they might screw you up on the "corrected
    vision test".

  9. If you lose your specs or a contact lens, or whatever, in charge of a 41
(or 44!) tonne truck doing 40 (or 60!) mph, then you're fucked. Or if
they break on a long journey. That's the reasoning.

ISTR that in Spain *all* spectacle wearing drivers must carry a spare
set in the car, by law.

I faced this when taking my hgv medical.

I think it's in case the specs/contact lenses fell off/out while
driving. The standard required for uncorrected sight isn't as high as
    for corrected sight.
Safety nazis run the country, didn't you know?

Well, the drivers' new uniform is a bright yellow polo shirt with black
    trim, will that do?

Incidentally, sports fans, Eddie Stobart Ltd. are co-sponsoring the
former Monstermob Ducati BSB team next season, to be known as
    Stobart-Monstermob Honda.

  13. OK
I did the stretch of road in question today, both ways, at the speed
limit for my vehicle. There were 5 dodgy overtakes, two of which
needing me to take avoiding action. Both of those were by other
trucks, 1 artic chicken gut bulker and 1 7.5 tonne wanker. They got
very close, cutting in when they ran out of road. I did consider
taking the 7.5 tonner out, but took a chunk of verge instead.

I've been using that road with an artic regularly for the past year,
and for many years previously on an occasional basis. Never once have
I had to take avoiding action.
    Today, twice.
    Thats road safety?

I stuck to the speed limits all day today. Most of the journey was
cross country with only about 50km of motorway in a total of 450km.
It took me 1.5 hours longer than the same trip last week, with similar
    traffic conditions.

I wont be repeating that exercise, I almost ran out of hours today.
Its going to be slowing down for the cameras and hoping to get the
warnings before I get to the camera vans.

Some one soon will die as a direct result of this new policy by Wilts
    Pol.

    wankers.

This is why the government want to enforce the limits with GPS based
    speed limiting devices.
Indeed, maybe it's all part of a master plan of our government.
So, if all these enforced limits come in for trucks, then our truck
industry will be slightly less efficient.
Oh, that'll be because of 'speeding drivers' though won't it?
    indeed.

Unfortunately it is, until they decide to change the speed limits, either
up our 40 to 50 or reduce the 60 to 50, thats why traffic police don't
usually bother us for doing 50 in our 40's.
Lets only hope if someone does its someone that will generate enough
publicity that questions get asked and maybe a change in law results.

As do train drivers: Uncorrected vision must be at least 3/60 in each
    eye.
