Ok, no probs... here you go...

a 44 Tonne truck going at 90 kph has the same energy as 5963 grams of
TNT, or a bike of 300kg going at about 677 mph

Speed limits for goods vehicles are based on maximum laden weight. So a
tractor unit without a trailer is subject to the same speed limit as
one with a fully laden trailer.

It would be impossible to manage a system based on actual weight - you
would have to put every truck on a weigh bridge before it be could
    accused of speeding.

When I was on my LGV test I had a cement mixer try and overtake me
because I was doing 40mph in a single carriageway NSL.

Oh dear, something like this happened some time ago and ended up with some
    unexpected consequences.

Trucks slowed down, cars tried to overtake, accident rate suddenly
    increased.

  5. No.
    see
    http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/09.shtml#103

Even though an unhitched 2 axle tractor unit will usually weigh less
than a fully loaded 7.5 tonner it is still allowed 10mph less than the
    heavier vehicle.

That is exactly what I'm worried about. That bit of A420 has a 50
limit and cameras. When the trucks were doing 50, the same as the
cars, all was well. Now the trucks will be doing 40 and the cars will
    be overtaking, or trying to.

I bet that'd be an impressive sight, on the scale of big things moving
    fast.

Similarly, I've only seen a TGV once from the road and that was
    impressive.

Was that when you were brewing up some coffee, rolling a fag, chatting on
the mobile and heating up a dogburger in the sandwich toaster at the same
    time?

  10. Since they are limited to 55, that would be rather difficult.
Most LGVs run at far less than max weight, which is 44 tonnes by the
    way.[/QUOTE]

I know. But the vast majority run at lower - you need six axles for 44
tonnes, as you probably know yourself.

I know that the accident rate is low, but not every driver is going to
be careering along at illegal speeds. A 50 limit I might go along with:
as you imply, few LGVs will be able to get up to more than that for any
length of time on A roads.
Sleepiness is a problem. I went up and interviewed Jim Horne, the expert
on the subject, a few years ago. Illuminating. But this is really what
I'm thinking about - the crash potential. There's a huge amount of
latent energy in a runaway truck.

Indeed. You know far more about the subject than I.

  11. Of course, something like Dodger's Wing doing 642 mph would probably
have more latent energy than the truck.....

  14. Just out of interest, what's the deal if you want a tractor unit for
pleasure only?[1] Can it be legally de-restricted, and would I need the
full artic licence to drive one?

[1] In case I ever decided to do a Chris Eubank after winning the
    lottery.

  15. What doesn't bear thinking about is the impact of said wing and the
salad dodging pilot if he fell asleep and started snoring just before
    the resulting collision.

  17. If and when I ever get round to doing my HGV(?) I'd like to work with a
large recognised firm like Eddie Stobart but in brighter colours.

Are the runs for the supermarkets any good? There were night trunking
opportunities and the first courier firm I worked at and it was my
ambition to get trained up when I got to 21 years of age. Life got in
the way just after that and it's only been recently since I've started
    thinking about it again.
