Trying to find a simple video viewer that'll let me watch video via a
    twain capture device.

JFGI returns thousands of matches for internet web cam viewers, pay for
video capture apps with all the bells & whistles you could ever want
(and a tiny unsizable video window), mac apps that look like just what
    I want.

Quicktime viewer, MS media player, winamp, Real player all don't seem
to be able to view live video via anything.

Its as if watching live local video is so passe nowadays they've
deleted all the s/w to do it.

    Any recommendations?

I'd try either videolan (available as a portable app from
portableapps.com), or maybe DScaler (which does a cracking job of TV
signals, so might work from other capture devices).

Tried videolan. It managed to open a window with video in it one in
five times or so, the rest of the time it didn't even bother to expand
to show where the video would be, or showed an all black window.

So a bit pants, but ta for the recommendations. Anything else?

DScaler often locks up the PC and isn't maintained anymore.

Ulead Video Studio 10 displays video + sound great, no problems, its
just total overkill and a pain having to tell it to capture, select
    device, select input...

If you've got NVIDIA graphics, I'm /fairly/ sure they used to include
an app with one of the drivers (WDM?). My memory's very hazy on this,
but I vaguely recall using it with a Pinacle capture card many moons
ago. Don't know if it would work with twain though.
