I have just purchased for my sins an 02 Megane and it has two keys,
one works with the central locking and starting, the other does not,
it lights up when it's pressed but nobody at home, so i guess the key
and the car need to get on friendly terms, anybody got the slightest
info if this is a diy job?

No its not going to be my car, but a seller as i got it cheap.

    Thanks
    Alan

  3. At a guess, I'd say prepare yourself for a nasty and expensive shock.
    Could be several hundred quid.

Try a fresh battery in the key.

Its a Dealer job for the key to be reprogrammed and I would advise a
new battery. Had to do the same on my 01 scenic about 12 months ago
and was charged £22 by the dealer. Check with the dealer first though
incase they have realised that the price is lower than a lot of other
makes. There must be independents who can do it cheaper but I do not
know of any, GSF must be worth a try.

  6. I was told that to have a new key made or reprogrammed or whatever for
the Scoob is something silly like £500. Got to find out if that's
    true....

I think a colleague had to shell out something unbelievable for a
replacement key for a Fiat Marea (of all things).

That will be because he'd lost the red master key - meaning a complete
    ECU and lockset was needed.

The newer Renault keys (card type) are not codable/reprogammable.
Replacement keys now come directly from the factory once you supply the
VIN, proof of identity yada yada. 200 quid plus IIRC.

There are usually loads of Renault keys for sale on ebay that are all
    completely useless.

  10. Those card-type keys are the most inconvenient crocks of shit anyone
ever came up with. IMHO, of course.

  11. Could have been. ISTR the sum of £800 being mentioned.

Sometimes (rarely, these days) you can put the car into programming mode
with a nifty combination of button pushing from within the car.
Autodata has this kind of info on it, I can have a check tomorrow if it
can be done with the Megane.

For a dealer to just program the key up and not supply one it may end up
not costing much at all, depending how many gizmos they have to get out.
    Probably worth a call.

Same as BMW - they make eight keys that are coded to the immobiliser
and you pay £90 for a new one direct from the factory, ordered through
a dealer. Once they're all gone it's new lockset time.

If you kill the transponder in the key then it will still work the
central locking remote, it will still unlock the doors and it will
still turn the ignition on but it just won't start the car. If you
then try and jump start the car, it will decide it's being nicked
and then shut down for a few hours instead. This is *really*
inconvenient when you happen to be at Cadwell Park and you live
    in Essex. DAMHIK,IJK,OK?

When I bought Cane's Fireblade there was a receipt in the paperwork for
a new ECU, lockset and keys - I guess he lost the keys at some point.
Total cost was something like 850 quid.

  15. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Lozzo
You did check the frame and engine numbers against the V5, right?

a colleague at my last job managed to leave his key in the boot of his Clio
of similar vintage, then slammed the hatch. As none of the doors had been
opened the central locking deadlocked. He didn't have a spare key.

AA patrol called. He couldn't get in without resorting to breaking a
window. Colleaugue told him to FRO and called a local independent in
Cwmbran. Within an hour the SO had arrived with a correctly cut & coded
    key, all from the VIN.

The ECU blew due to a seized value and had to be replaced.

Ooer, costly for something as simple as a seized exup valve.
